Softcover, bound in printed self-wraps, removed in the distant past from a collection of bound pamphlets with stab marks along the spine. 3 pages, plus a blank page. There are minor creases with some minor stains to the cove…r pages. Good. A message on appropriations for the Indian Department regarding the colonization of Texas Indians upon reservations and the opening of communications with Texas tribes of Comanches and Apaches who have not yet approved treaties with the United States. Of note is Special Agent for Texas Indians Robert S. Neighbors' report in the form of a letter to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs Colonel George Manypenny. The Indian agent and Texas state legislator Robert Simpson Neighbors (1815-1859) was regarded as a determined protector of Indian interests. Neighbors was murdered after rightfully accusing the Belknap sheriff and saloon owner Patrick Murphy of stealing horses from the Indian Reservations. Murphy's brother-in-law, a man name Cornet, accused Neighbors of defaming Murphy. Neighbors was murdered by Cornet with a shotgun when he refused to recant the accusation. Cornet was later killed during his arrest after going on the run.

A politician of limited ability, Pierce was behind one of the most crucial pieces of legislation in American history. Although he did not author the Kansas-N…ebraska Act, he did encourage its passage by Congress. And that piece of legislation set the nation on its path to civil war. Like many American politicians, Franklin Pierce's career was aided by his father, a two-term governor of New Hampshire. Before he was thirty, Franklin Pierce had served in the New Hampshire legislature and had been elected to the U.S. Congress wherehe served as both a congressman and senator. Bored and lonely in Washington, the young congressman developed a drinking problem and a reputation as agossipy Washington insider. In an attempt to settle down, the handsome, socially gregarious Pierce married Jane Means Appleton. Jane Pierce washer husband's opposite; she was painfully shy, deeply religious, often in bad health, and a strong advocate of the temperance movement. She detested Washington and refused to live there, even after Pierce became a U.S. senator in 1837. Indeed, Jane's disgust with the political life in Washington must have been behind Pierce's decision to resign from the Senate in 1841. Subsequently, Franklin Pierce served in the Mexican-American War, and in something of a surprise was elected President in 1852. After his presidency he retired to Concord, New Hampshire, where he died in 1869. Very good condition but somewhat faded. The red color of the US General Land Office Seal is washed out, but the "Franklin Pierce" signature is penned in dark ink, as is that of his Asst. Secretary. However, the red color shows throughthe verso. "Now Know Ye that there is herefore granted by the United States unto the said George W. Badger the tract of Land above described: To Have and to Hold the said tract of Land, with the appurtenances thereof, unto the said George W. Badger and to his heirs and assigns forever. In testimony whereof, I, Franklin Pierce, President of the United States of America, have caused these Letters to be made Patent and the Seal of the General Land Office to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand at the City of Washington, the Ninth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Fifty three and of the independence of the United States the seventy-eighth. By the President: Signed: "Franklin Pierce" and by the Asst. Sec'y, "Jno. H. Wheeler." All edges gilt, brown endpapers. Front endpaper missing. Inscribed on a single leaf by former President Franklin Pierce: "How are you A.A. [Appleton Academy] / Remember Your…Friend / Franklin Pierce / Manchester / New Hampshire / Apr. 16, 1864." This album was signed four months after the death of First Lady Jane Appleton Pierce, whose family was the namesake of the Appleton Academy. After leaving office in March 1857, Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) traveled in Europe with Jane Pierce for several years, returned to Concord, New Hampshire, and lived there for the rest of his life. During the Civil War, he remained a Northern Democrat but opposed many Lincoln administration policies, publicly blamed Lincoln for the war, and lost standing with many former friends and allies as a result. President Pierce died in Concord on October 8, 1869, after many years of political isolation and declining health. Autograph Album featuring alumni of the Appleton Academy in Ipswich, New Hampshire, including the inscription of former President Franklin Piece. (illustrateur). Signed.
