Author's fair-copy manuscripts of two important and influential Dutch essays on the applied arts and society, written by the artist, craftsman, teacher and writer Richard Nicolaüs ("Rik") Roland Holst (1868-1938), husband of the Marxist poet Henriette Roland Holst-Van der Schalk and uncle of the poet Adriaan Roland Holst. Both essays were published in the journal De nieuwe tijd. These essays helped to promote in the Netherlands ideas that had been introduced by John Ruskin in England in his essays "Unto this last" (1860) and especially "On the nature of gothic" (1853), and promoted and put into practice by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement in the next four decades.The wrappers of both essays have come loose, and some leaves in the first also show minor damage to the fold around the sewing, but they are still in very good condition. Author's manuscripts of two essays influential in the development of Dutch fine and applied arts. Sewn in quires and each essay formerly glued (now loose) in dark grey thick paper wrappers.
