Ajouter au panier8vo., (8 4/8 x 5 4/8 inches). Original tan printed paper wrappers (creased, torn and soiled). Provenance: with the ownership inscription of Capt. Geo. P. Jacobs on the title-page; inscribed at the head of the first page "To W.T. Sherman Maj. Gen. USA from Geo. Jacob ." First edition, and exceptionally rare. "The author claims the right of knowing as much about the siege of Vicksburg as any one residing in that town, from the fact that he was at that point, in Company A, Withers' Light Artillery, as a private, when the first gun was fired in its defense, and served as such until the raising of the first siege. In September, 1862, he was discharged from the army on account of sickness, an being unable to return to his home, (New Orleans) obtained a position in the office of the "Vicksburg Whig", where he remained until its destruction by fire in the early part of May, 1863, and was taken prisoner and paroled after the surrender" (Author's Preface). Abrams was an outspoken chronicler of the siege of Vicksburg, condemning General Pemberton's actions in defense of the town in an early article published in the "Advertiser and Register". Born in Pennsylvania, and so not particularly popular with his Confederate troops, Pemberton assumed command of the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana in October of 1862. His most important task was to maintain Confederate control of some portion of the Mississippi River, in effect to hold two vital east-bank fortresses at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and Port Hudson, Louisiana. Against the combined efforts of Generals Grant and Sherman he was "soundly beaten and penned up within his Vicksburg defenses. After six weeks of siege, during which his men and the citizens of Vicksburg lived in dugout bomb shelters, consumed every four-footed creature inside their lines, and were finally reduced to eating tree bark, Pemberton finally surrendered on 4 July 1863. Port Hudson fell within the week. Despite his stubborn defense, southerners loathed Pemberton for surrendering on 4 July, of all days" (Steven E. Woodworth for ADNB). Howes A21. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
