Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. This purple cloth covered book is in very good condition but does have a very faded spine. The top and bottom of the spine are a very little crumpled and corners bumped but no fraying or damage. The contents are clean and are not annotated. We assume that the contents are complete. I have attempted to collate the many plates in all the different sections and was initially dismayed to find one of the plates , number 13 missing within the section 'Machinery, Workshops, and electricity. . However, it appears that a rather superstitious person did not include that in a collection of plates labelled from 1 to 15 (please see relevent list of illustrations)! The contents of the book include: The Organisation and expansion of the Corps, 1914-18, Organisation of Engineer intelligence and information, Camouflage Service , Concrete Defence Works and Factories, Forward Communications, Machinery, Workshops and Electricity, Anti-Aircraft Searchlights, Inundations, Schools. For each Section there are chapters many of which have plates, both on paper and glassine, appendices and tables. There are also a few B/W photographs. 372pp. On the back free endpaper there is a neat note written in pencil which doesn't appear to relate to this book, more about grazing for a pony and cows! Bound in brown cloth with a camel on the front cover, gilt still bright, top edges gilt, binding and hinges tight. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper [appears to be] "To T. W. Budge / With very kind regards from / Major Jennings". Sir Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge [1857-1934] was a well known Egyptologist, Orientalist and Philologist, with one of his studies being the Ge'ez language of Ethiopia. First edition. Collects five novelettes and short stories: "Salembier" -- "The Brand" -- "Felo De Se" -- "The Phrenologist" -- "The Roué" -- "The Affianced." "A collection of six tales purportedly taken from the diary of judge in France during the time of Napoleon. The stories are all sensationalistic crime stories, many with gruesome details such as the executioner counting severed heads at the foot of the guillotine in 'Salembier' and the debauched count in 'The Roue' shooting himself in the head at the end of his trial, splattering a priest's robe with brain matter and blood. The stories feature doomed couples that commit murder/suicide and treacherous noblemen who lead dual lives as vicious leaders of notorious bandit gangs. The most ingenious story is 'Felo De Se' which examines the plight of a soap-boiler who suffers muscular convulsions that distort his facial features to such an extent that he ends up being sentenced to death for having murdered himself. Highly entertaining stories, these six tales were reprinted with ten additional stories in the expanded edition of DIARY, retitled DIARY OF A JUDGE BEING TRIALS OF LIFE COMPILED FROM THE NOTE-BOOK OF A DECEASED JUDGE, issued by Ward Lock in 1860" (Boyd White).
