First leaf present is margin-worn title leaf, i.e. pages i-ii. Past owner's pencil signature at top of title page; some foxing and soiling; at least one occurrence of ink underlining on page 192 but with no other such markings readily apparent upon a cursory perusal; several leaves vertically creased from fold-ins. Scarce reconstruction-era Selma, Alabama bookseller ticket for Boyd's Book Store affixed at rear pastedown's top right; online research fails to reveal the operating years of Boyd's Book Store but the retailer is mentioned in John Hardy's 1879 book SELMA; HER INSTITUTIONS AND HER MEN as well as in September and October 1883 advertisements in the Selma newspaper THE ALABAMA BAPTIST which specify Robert S. Wetmore as proprietor and with the shop as "Head Quarters for Base Ball, Croquet, etc." (a June 1882 ad includes lawn tennis).
