Four large glossy b. w. photographs over all size: 18.3 x 13 cm., image size: 17.1 x 12.1 cm., very clean, flawless, each with a slip of printed paper laid on the back side French text. OBSCURE! This is an unusual group of original French press photographs. The photos cover the Sino-Japanese war from 1938 to 1939. Herein we can have a perspective on the rare activities of Chinese women in the anti-Japanese war effort. There are very few photographs or histories outlining the contribution of Chinese women to the war effort. These rare photographs taken by an unknown French news photographer captured the spirit and contribution against the Japanese. Little has been written or recorded about Chinese women in the army or police units. *** THE FOUR PHOTOGRAPHS: a. Dated July 15, 1938. . English for above: THE CHINESE INVOLVED IN FIGHTING [Japanese] INVADERS. A group of Chinese prisoners photograph Lushan [Central China]. Among the soldiers, we see a girl that the Japanese have temporarily left holding a big rifle. . This is a stunning image. Here we have a Chinese girl holding a very long rifle with a leather strap over her neck connecting to the rifle. She also sports a bayonet scabbard lacking the sword-length bayonet. Her expression is stunning, as she gases at the camera. On each side of her are two other Chinese men, wearing heavily padded jackets, their feet are bound with rags, lacking shoes. These sad prisoners are being held by the Japanese. The question remains, just who and what relationship does this girl have ? If she is not a prisoner, then she is either a Japanese, which she is not from her Chinese form of dress. If she is Japanese, why would she wear such bedraggled cloths like a beggar, yet sport a rifle ? * d. Dated October 1, 1938. UN REGIMENT DE FEMMES CHINOISES. N.P.M une section du regiment Chinois de Chunking a son arrivee a Hankow, en route pour le front.
