Ajouter au panierComplete two volume set in slipcase. Full title - DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA BY ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE; THE HENRY REEVE TEXT AS REVISED BY FRANCIS BOWEN NOW FURTHER CORRECTED AND EDITED WITH INTRODUCTION, EDITORIAL NOTES, AND BIBLIOGRAPHIES BY PHILLIPS BRADLEY. VOLS. I + II. Thirteenth printings (as stated upon each volume's respective copyright page; originally published April 1945). Brown cloth slipcase, H 22.75cm x L 16cm, with inner white felt lining; some external rubbing with slender scratch to top panel; seams are firm. Undecorated clear acetate/mylar dust jackets lightly rubbed. Both hardcover volumes, H 21.75cm x L 15cm, in handsome dark brown leather-style binding; four slightly raised bands to spines; bright gilt stamping to boards and spines; Volume I's front board personalized with gilt lettered "Robert E. Cannon" at bottom center (rear colophon credits typographic scheme and binding design to W.A. Dwiggins - William Addison Dwiggins, 1880-1956, but, of course, that must reference the original edition as this 1980 set is posthumous). Gilt top edges; deckle fore-edges. Faux marbling effect to front and rear endpapers. Interior pages are bright and clean. Bindings retain some crispness. A fine set in a near fine slipcase. VOLUME I: [2], i-cxiv, 1-434, i-xii, [3] pages. VOLUME II: [2], i-xiv, 1-401, [1], i-x, [2] pages. The most attractive modern edition of DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA encountered by this bookseller; no publisher statement explaining the binding so curious whether this was a special issue by Knopf or perhaps a post-purchase rebinding by the aforementioned owner Robert E. Cannon (no bookbindery ticket present to aid such a determination) - the presence of a very sturdy slipcase seems indicative of a specialist binder as publisher trade slipcases rarely reflect such rigid construction. Acquired from a Tupelo, Mississippi estate with no further provenance known. Issued as part of Alfred A. Knopf's "The American Past: An Informal Series." Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 5 pounds (2.26 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 4 volumes. All four volumes are just back from the bindery where they have been lovingly restored with original boards preserved, text blocks and endpapers all retained, but with new spines, headbands, and gutters. The original spine strips have been rescued and reused as much as possible, laid down over sympathetic brown bookcloth; these spine strips are nearly complete for volumes 3 and 4, and mostly gone for volumes 1 and 2. (please request photos). All 4 volumes tightly bound and fully functional. Volumes 1 and 2 dated 1838 on the title pages, stated Third Editions. Volume 1 has 302 pages + 2 pages of ads (no map). Volume 2 has 325 pages and 2 pages of ads. Volumes 3 and 4 are dated 1840 on the title pages. Volume 3 has 333 pages + 2 pages of ads. Volume 4 has 365 pages + two pages of ads. Volume 4 begins with the Table of Contents page, so title page is missing from this volume. These are the first editions of volumes 3 and 4 -- other sellers have speculated that it's likely that volumes 1 and 2 were reprinted from the old plates when the later volumes were published, in order to make a complete set. This is a promising hypothesis; the first 4 of these volumes have the same ownership name across the front free endpaper (G.H. Sutton, jr). The final volume was lacking front endpaper, so the rear one was moved to the front and a new endpaper added at the rear. The original boards have blindstamped decorations and bumped corners; it also appears that the first two volumes are in brown cloth and the second two are in a cloth that was closer to purple, but the spine strips have faded to indistinguishable brown, and even the covers require an intentional study to notice that they were once different tones. An attractive and scarce set. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although sometimes they do get it right). Extra shipping will be needed, as well.

Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville (1805 1859), was a French aristocrat, diplomat, sociologist, political scientist, political philosopher, and historian. He is best known for his work Democracy in America (appearing in two volumes, 1835 and 1840). In both, he analyzed the living standards and social conditions of individuals as well as their relationship to the market and state in Western societies. Democracy in America was published after Tocqueville's travels in the United States and is today considered an early work of sociology and political science. Tocqueville wrote of the New World and its burgeoning democratic order. Observing from the perspective of a detached social scientist, Tocqueville wrote of his travels through the United States in the early 19th century when the Market Revolution, Western expansion and Jacksonian democracy were radically transforming the fabric of American life. His view on government reflects his belief in liberty and the need for individuals to be able to act freely while respecting others' rights. Tocqueville explicitly cites inequality as being incentive for the poor to become rich and notes that it is not often that two generations within a family maintain success and that it is inheritance laws that split and eventually break apart someone's estate that cause a constant cycle of churn between the poor and the rich, thereby over generations making the poor rich and the rich poor. He cites protective laws in France at the time that protected an estate from being split apart among heirs, thereby preserving wealth and preventing a churn of wealth such as was perceived by him in 1835 within the United States. Henry Reeve (1813 1895) was an English man of letters and judicial official. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, PART TWO ONLY! RAREA1840DTVX 01/25 - HK2276.

The second edition in English of the first part and the first edition in English of the second part. Translation of de Tocqueville's 'De la d'émocratie en Amérique.' Sir Robert Peel, Bt. (1788-1850) was a British Conservative stateman, who served twice as Prime Minister and twice as Home Secretary, as well as founding the Metropolitan Police Service. He notably issued the Tamworth Manifesto and voted against his party to repeal the Corn Laws. A reference to the work by Robert Peel can be found in his acceptance speech as Rector of Glasgow University in 1837: "Let me earnestly advise your perusal of the work, if you have not yet read it, of a very able and intelligent Frenchman, who has made the institutions of the United States the peculiar object of his observation and study. He is an advocate of popular principles in a most extensive sense his feelings are altogether with the present dynasty of France, as compared with the former. His testimony, as well from actual personal experience, as on account of freedom from prejudice, is above exception. M. Tocqueville is the name of the Frenchman to whom I allude; and this is the account which he gives of the results produced by republican institutions in the United States, in respect to that which one would have thought was the especial good they would realise ; namely, independence of thought, and liberty of speech and action. He says " I know no country in which there is so little true independence of mind, and freedom of discussion, as in America. In America the majority raises very formidable barriers to the liberty of opinion. Within these barriers an author may write whatever he pleases, but he will repent it if he ever step beyond them." (Loud cheers.) " In democratic states, organised on the principles of the American republics, the authority of the majority is so absolute, so irresistible, that a man must give up his rights as a citizen, and almost abjure his quality as a human being, if he intends to stray from the track which it lays down." There is freedom for you, if you are inclined to have a will of your own! "If ever the free institutions of America are destroyed, that event may be attributed to the unlimited authority of the majority, which may at some future time urge the minorities to desperation, and oblige them to have recourse to physical force. Anarchy will then be the result, but it will have been brought about by despotism." (Long-continued cheering.) M. Tocqueville then quotes the expression of opinion by Jefferson, whom he declares to be the most powerful advocate of democratic principles the United States ever produced. "The executive power," said Jefferson, "is not the only, perhaps not the most prominent, object of my solicitude. The tyranny of the legislature is the danger most to be feared.". 1377830.
