This captivating historical account explores the compelling problem of French Canadian immigration in 19th-century New England and the United States. The author, an impassioned advocate for evangelization, deftly weaves together historical context with personal anecdotes to illustrate how the influx of French-speaking Catholics challenged Protestant ideals. The book delves into the complexities of the situation, examining the antagonistic relationship between the French and the American church, and uncovering the deliberate suppression of education by the Romish hierarchy. Through meticulous research, the author reveals the devastating impact of ultramontanism on French Canadian society, leaving them impoverished and disillusioned. The work exposes the hypocrisy of those who both supported Romanism and criticized its victims, highlighting the urgent need for educational and religious reforms to uplift this marginalized population. This book is a powerful indictment of the consequences of religious oppression and a clarion call for unity and understanding in the face of cultural and religious diversity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Some occasional library stamps, otherwise clean and unmarked. A scarce little title. Amaron (1852-1917) was a French-Canadian Presbyterian minister who "accepted a call to the French Protestant Church in Lowell, Mass. , to continue the work of evangelizing French Canadians. During the second half of the 19th century hundreds of thousands of French Canadians migrated south to work in the factories of New England: by 1900 they would form about 10 per cent of that region's population. Recognizing the need for educational institutions to support his evangelization, Amaron founded the French Protestant College at Lowell in 1885." (Dict. Of Canadian Biography). Amaron felt that the flood of Catholic French immigrants to New England was detrimental to the existing culture and that the immigrants needed to be converted to Protestantism or turned back. A scarce little book with the author's signature. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 213 pages; Signed by Author.

Published in 1891 by the French Protestant College of Springfield, Massachusetts, the 213-page book addresses the massive influx of French-Canadian immigrants into New England during the late 19th century. Amaron argues that the rapid growth of the French-Canadian population-which reached roughly 10% of New England's total population by 1900-poses an existential risk to the region's Anglo-Saxon, Puritan-rooted heritage. Book has moderate age wear, including scuffs, soils, torn flyleaf, etc. Book.
