Jeffery John Archer Amherst, 5th Earl Amherst (1896Ð1993)was a British pilot and airline director.He was a regular contributor in the House of Lords, making his maiden speech in 1934. His last recorded speech was in February 1985. Gladys Edith Mabel Calthrop, ne Treeby (1894Ð1980) was an artist and leading British stage designer, known as the designer for many of No'l Coward's plays and musicals. Signed by Jeffery Amherst (1717-1797) 1st Baron of Amherst, KB, and countersigned by his secretary Arthur Mair. Dated December 2, 1761 at New York, it conveys permission to John Hawkins acting paymaster of the Engineering Department a sum of more than 8,535 pounds Sterling for expenses in "carrying on the Works at several Forts." The document was torn in half, with no loss, and was repaired long ago with archival tape on the reverse. Minor soiling and creasing. Amherst is credited as the architect of Britain's successful campaign to conquer the territory of New France during the Seven Years' War. Amherst's legacy is controversial due to his expressed desire to spread smallpox among the disaffected tribes of Indians during Pontiac's War. Size: Quarto (4to). Signed by Author(s). Autograph.

Franked 'War Office | ', and bearing two circular postmarks, one of them in red with the word 'FREE'. Good, on aged and creased paper. Assuring Tonyn that it will give him 'much pleasure' to recommend Tonyn's nephew George Augustus Tonyn for an army commission, 'as soon as I may be able to do it consistently with the very great number of Applications which I have already on my hands'. 'If the young Gentleman should have occasion to come to London (but I would by no means have him come on purpose) I shall be glad to see him.' Unsigned Letter: 4to, 1 p. 6 lines. Good, on aged paper. He has recommended to the king that the nephew be an Ensign in the 91st foot, and 'His Majesty has been pleased to approve of him accordingly.'George Augustus Tonyn was appointed Lieutenant in the 48th foot in 1790; by 1811 he was a half-pay Lieutenant-Colonel in the 95th.

Approx. 6¾" x 7¼", in ink; traces of previous mounting in the corners, previous folds; all else very good. The bottom of the sheet has been cut away. Were there a salutation it is lost. "Lord Amherst presents his compliments to the Marquis of Graham, he laid his Lordship's and Mr. Douglas's proposals before the King today, and His Majesty was pleased to express his commendation on their zeal for his service, but the King at the same time said he did not intend to raise any new Corps of Cavalry, till the augmentation to the old Corpses was completed.".
