Paperback. Etat : Good. The field of psychopharmacology is often confusing and, well, more than a little intimidating. These medications have been known to save peoples' lives. And these medications have been known to have a deleterious impact on peoples' lives. The same can be said for psychotherapy. Indeed, this caring profession can be a life-saver. And. Overall, this goal of this book is not to overwhelm the reader- whether that reader is a health professional or a layman. The focus is to make this topic- psychopharmacology- understandable. Having said that, the author refuses to dumb the topic down. However, instead of using confounding, overwhelming, and, in many cases, unnecessary scientific talk this book is offered as an easy read, with difficult theoretical concepts made understandable with the use of metaphor and comparisons to everyday life experiences. Does this focus make this book less than scientific? Well, yes, to a degree. But science does not have to be hard- and the better science is understood, the better the ability of those who use these scientific theories (clinical practitioners, patients, family members, students, etc.) to help others will be realized. And that is the goal of this book. Make the topic understandable, and, in some instances, fun.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. Food expert and celebrated food historian Andrew F. Smith recounts--in delicious detail--the creation of contemporary American cuisine. The diet of the modern American wasn't always as corporate, conglomerated, and corn-rich as it is today, and the style of American cooking, along with the ingredients that compose it, has never been fixed. With a cast of characters including bold inventors, savvy restaurateurs, ruthless advertisers, mad scientists, adventurous entrepreneurs, celebrity chefs, and relentless health nuts, Smith pins down the truly crackerjack history behind the way America eats. Smith's story opens with early America, an agriculturally independent nation where most citizens grew and consumed their own food. Over the next two hundred years, however, Americans would cultivate an entirely different approach to crops and consumption. Advances in food processing, transportation, regulation, nutrition, and science introduced highly complex and mechanized methods of production. The proliferation of cookbooks, cooking shows, and professionally designed kitchens made meals more commercially, politically, and culturally potent. To better understand these trends, Smith delves deeply and humorously into their creation. Ultimately he shows how, by revisiting this history, we can reclaim the independent, locally sustainable roots of American food. …

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. From internationally-bestselling author and journalist Andrew Smith, an immersive, alarming, sharp-eyed journey into the bizarre world of computer code, told through his sometimes painful, often amusing attempt to become a coder himself Throughout history, technological revolutions have been driven by the invention of machines. But today, the power of the technology transforming our world lies in an intangible and impenetrable cosmos of software: algorithmic code. So symbiotic has our relationship with this code become that we barely notice it anymore. We can't see it, are not even sure how to think about it, and yet we do almost nothing that doesn't depend on it. In a world increasingly governed by technologies that so few can comprehend, who--or what--controls the future? Devil in the Stack follows Andrew Smith on his immersive trip into the world of coding, passing through the stories of logic, machine-learning and early computing, from Ada Lovelace to Alan Turing, and up to the present moment, behind the scenes into the lives--and minds--of the new frontiers people of the 21st century: those who write code. Smith embarks on a quest to understand this sect in what he believes to be the only waypossible: by learning to code himself. Expansive and effervescent, Devil in the Stack delivers a portrait of code as both a vivid culture and an impending threat. How do we control a technology that most people can't understand? And are we programming ourselves out of existence? Perhaps most terrifying of all: Is there something about the way we compute - the way code works - that is innately at odds with the way humans have evolved? By turns revelatory, unsettling, and joyously funny, Devil in the Stack is an essential book for our times, of vital interest to anyone hoping to participate in the future-defining technological debates to come.…

A teen at boarding school grapples with life, love, and rugby in this unforgettable novel that is "alternately hilarious and painful, awkward and enlightening" (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Ryan Dean West is a fourteen-year-old junior at a boarding school for rich kids. He's living in Opportunity Hall, the dorm for troublemakers, and rooming with the biggest bully on the rugby team. And he's madly in love with his best friend Annie, who thinks of him as a little boy. Ryan Dean manages to survive life's complications with the help of his sense of humor, rugby buddies, and his penchant for doodling comics. But when the unthinkable happens, he has to figure out how to hold on to what's important, even when it feels like everything has fallen apart. Filled with hand-drawn infographics and illustrations and told in a pitch-perfect voice, this realistic depiction of a teen's experience strikes an exceptional balance of hilarious and heartbreaking. Paperback. Etat : Good. Told with Andrew Smith's signature dark humor, Rabbit & Robot tells the story of Cager Messer, a boy who's stranded on the Tennessee--his father's lunar-cruise utopia--with insane robots. Cager has been transported to the Tennessee, a giant lunar-cruise ship orbiting the moon that his dad owns, by Billy and Rowan to help him shake his Woz addiction. Meanwhile, Earth, in the midst of thirty simultaneous wars, burns to ash beneath them. And as the robots on board become increasingly insane and cannibalistic, and the Earth becomes a toxic wasteland, the boys have to wonder if they'll be stranded alone in space forever. In his new novel, Andrew Smith, Printz Honor author of Grasshopper Jungle, will make you laugh, cry, and consider what it really means to be human.…

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Sam Abernathy prepares to leave home for the first time in this charming follow-up to award-winning author Andrew Smith?s The Size of Truth.Vampires have just moved in to the haunted house next door. All twelve-year-old Sam Abernathy wanted to do was make the most of his last few weeks in Blue Creek before he has to say goodbye. Goodbye to the well he fell in eight years ago; goodbye to cooking at Lily Putt?s snack bar; goodbye to his overdramatic best friend, Karim; goodbye to unsweetened iced tea at Colonel Jenkins?s Diner every Saturday with Bahar (who he does not have a crush on); goodbye to his old life. But the arrival of the Monster People throws a wrench into his plans. Things only get worse when the new family hires Bahar to babysit their child, Boris, who is almost certainly a cannibal. And then?scariest of all?they employ Sam?s catering services. He can?t possibly say no. If he doesn?t survive the summer, Sam might not have to say bye-bye to Blue Creek at all.…
