Sahl Rabban at-Tabari* hatte ich die Absicht, die ganze Schrift zu übersetzen und zu erläutern, da sie als eins der ältesten arabisch geschriebenen medizinischen Kompendien historisch wichtig ist. Andere Arbeiten, die erledigt werden mußten, zwangen mich, den Plan aufzuschieben. Jedoch hatte ich schon Vorarbeiten zum letzten Teil jenes Buches unternommen, der einen Auszug aus den indischen medizinischen Schriften bringt und deshalb vom Verfasser mit der besonderen Überschrift: Aus den Büchern der Inder" versehen wurde. In diesem Teile des Werkes, über dessen Quellen schon Meyerhof in seiner Schrift: Ali at-Tabari's ,Paradise of Wisdom', one of the oldest Arabic Compendiums of Medicine"** das Nötige gesagt hat, sind neben den für die Geschichte der Medizin interessanten Auszügen aus Schriften indischer Ärzte viele Seiten füllende Vorschriften über die Herstellung von Heilmitteln vorhanden, deren Übersetzung im ganzen nicht lohnt. Daher beschränke ich mich in dieser Arbeit auf die Übersetzung und Erläuterung der Kapitel 134 der 4. Maqäla des 7. Nau'. Das 35. Kapitel ist schon in der anfangs genannten Schrift von mir übersetzt und erläutert worden. Die wichtigsten Vorschriften des 36. Kapitels über die Zubereitung zusammengesetzter Heilmittel werden später in einer besonderen Arbeit gebracht werden. / Die Übersetzung der propädeutischen Kapitel aus dem Paradies der Weisheit über die Medizin des 'Ali b. Sahl Rabban at-Tabari umfaßt die ersten 84 Seiten der Druckausgabe, die von Siddiqi 1928 herausgebracht wurde. Sie enthält nach den einleitenden Ausführungen des arabischen Verfassers den 1. Abschnitt (nau") und vom 2. Abschnitt die ersten beiden Abhandlungen (magala). Die Berliner Handschrift Landberg 266 habe ich noch einmal eingesehen. Die zweite Berliner Handschrift, Berlin Ms. or. oct. 3003, enthält die hier übersetzten Kapitel nicht. Die Besprechung der SiDDiQischen Druckausgabe durch C. Beockelmann in der Zeitschrift für Semitistik (Z. f. S.) Bd. VIII, S. 273ff., ist hinzugezogen worden. Einige von mir in meiner Arbeit Gynäkologie., Embryologie und Frauenhygiene aus dem Paradies der Weisheit über die Medizin des "All b. Sahl Rabban at-Tabari schon übersetzten Kapitel mußten, um den Zusammenhang zu wahren, mit aufgenommen werden, sind aber auch an manchen Stellen verbessert worden. Die Gotha-Handschrift, die ich bei der oben erwähnten Arbeit verwenden konnte, stand mir nicht mehr zur Verfügung. - Alfred Siggel (* 15. August 1884 in Berlin; 23.
