N&M Press reprint (original pub 1952). xx + 515pp with four b/w plates and 89 maps/diagramsPublished Price £24 Seventeen out of thirty-two battalions of the Hampshires (they became 'Royal' in 1946) went overseas during the Great War, between them they served in France and Flanders, Gallipoli, Macedonia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Palestine, India, Aden, Persia and Russia. Three VCs (all 2Lts) and 82 Battle Honours were awarded (the highest number awarded to any regiment in the Great War) and deaths totalled some 7,580. Atkinson, whose war histories rank among the best written, had two major problems with this one and he makes them clear in his preface. First, the time factor. Over thirty years had passed and another world war by the time this history came out. The ranks of the survivors, to whom the regimental historian looks for personal memories and anecdotal accounts to supplement the more official record, had thinned and among those who were left memories were growing dim; and secondly the Part II Daily Orders were destroyed in a WWII blitz. These documents, though tedious to have to plough through, contained invaluable information such as changes in the officers within a battalion, dates and numbers of casualties, the award of honours, the arrival of drafts, and the disposal of officers and men of disbanded battalions, all meat and drink to the regimental historian. The main sources for the account are the battalion war diaries supplemented to some extent by those of the brigades and divisions in which they served.Despite the problems Atkinson has put together a good, solid history which maintains the high standard of his previous works and one in which the narrative is certainly well supported by maps and sketches. The whole history constitutes a chronological record of the war describing all those events and actions which involved one or more battalions of the regiment, beginning with Le Cateau in which the 1st Battalion (11th Brigade, 4th Division) took part. After 2nd Ypres come chapters on Gallipoli where the 2nd, 1/4th and 10th Battalions fought. Most of the action is, of course on the Western front, but the other theatres are not neglected as chapters describing the doings of the battalions engaged in those campaigns are slotted into the overall framework at the appropriate time. There is a list of Honours and Awards including Mentioned in Despatches and Foreign Awards, and there is a nominal roll of the regular and special reserve officers with date of rank and promotions, noting those who died. SB. x + 529pp with 8 b/w illus and 36 maps.Published Price £22 This is a very good history by one who is also the author of several regimental histories of the Great War. Cyril Falls regarded the 7th Division as one of the greatest fighting formations Britain ever sent to war. It landed initially in Zeebrugge in October 1914 as part of a force intended to relieve Antwerp, but almost immediately moved down to Ypres where it joined the main BEF. It fought in many of the major battles on the Western Front before being sent to Italy at the end of 1917 where it saw out the war. There are a number of useful appendices giving order of battle information with all changes in units, commanders and staff. Tables of casualties by units are given in the text for each major battle in which the division was involved; altogether the division suffered 68,000 casualties, among the highest recorded for any division. No list of honours and awards other than VCs. Plenty of sketch maps are very helpful in illustrating the actions being described. Book.…

SB. xi + 614pp with two maps and 51 battlefield sketch-plans/diagramsPublished Price £28 In August 1914 the SWB consisted of two regular battalions, the 1st in Bordon with 3rd Brigade 1st Division, the 2nd in Tientsin; the 3rd Special Reserve Battalion in Brecon; and one Territorial battalion, the Brecknockshire Battalion, also in Brecon. By the end of the war a further 17 battalions had been raised eight of which went on active service and all of them feature in this excellent history, even if only briefly in the case of those that did not leave the UK. Total dead numbered some 5,500, 64 Battle Honours were awarded and six VCs were won. There is a list of Honours and Awards, including Mention in Despatches and foreign awards, and also the Roll of Honour in which officers are listed alphabetically, other ranks alphabetically by battalions; place and date of death are not given.Battalions of the regiment served on the Western Front, at Gallipoli (2nd and 4th), in Macedonia (7th and 8th) and Mesopotamia (4th). Two of the active service battalions, 11th and 12th, were disbanded in France in Feb 1918 when divisions in the BEF were reduced from twelve to nine battalions. The 1st Battalion landed in France on 13 August 1914 with 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, and stayed with them for the rest of the war, fighting on the Western Front. The 2nd Battalion was in China when war broke out, and its first operation was the capture of the German naval base of Tsingtao, in cooperation with the Japanese, and with this accomplished in November 1914 the battalion returned to the UK where it arrived in January 1915. Back home, it was allocated to the newly formed 'incomparable' 29th Division, the last of the regular divisions to be formed (apart from the Guards Division) and with which it landed on Gallipoli in April that year. After Gallipoli it went to France with the division, arriving in March 1916, and there it stayed to the end.The Brecknocks served throughout the war in Aden and India, the 4th went to Gallipoli with 13th (Western) Division and from there to Mesopotamia where it won two of regiment's six VCs. The 5th and 6th Battalions were Pioneers and fought in France as divisional pioneer battalions while the 7th and 8th, both in 22nd Division, after only a month in France went with the division to Macedonia in November 1915 where they saw out the rest of the war. The 10th and 11th Battalions served with 38th (Welsh) Division in France from the end of 1915, and finally the 12th (Bantam) Battalion crossed to France in June 1916 with 119th Brigade 40th Division in which it served till disbanded in Feb 1918. SB xxviii 629pp pottraits,plate,maps , 2003 N&MP Reprint of 1924 Original EditionPublished Price £24 This substantial second of three volumes in the History of the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment details the regiment's part in the Great War from 1914-1919. The regiment's Roll of Honour of 6,866 killed - from a total of 21,000 casualties - attests to its proud place at the sharp end of the war from Mons in 1914 through to its final battle in the Mormal Forest in November 1918. Present in the BEF at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne in 1914, the regiment distinguished itself at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915 when, the line to its left having given way before relentless German assaults, it was attacked from flank and rear, yet still refused to give way. Eventually expanded to 22 battalions, the Regiment was in the Ypres Salient in the Spring of 1915, fighting at Hill 60 and experiencing the first gas attack in the 2nd Battle of Ypres in April. The R.W.K.'s 7th Battalion took part in the July 1st 1916 attack on the Somme, as part of the Eighteenth Division, and was among that terrible day's success stories, occupying enemy trenches at Montauban. The same Battalion saw hard fighting later in the battle in the fight for the Schwaben Redoubt. The 10th and 11th battalions co-operated with the debut of the tank at Flers in mid-September. The RWK took part in the Battles of Arras and Messines in 1917, before plunging into the mud of Third Ypres (Passchendaele). The 1st Battalion lost 12 out of 16 officers, and 348 out of 581 men alone before Gheluvelt on October 26th, which the history tersely describes as a 'disastrous day'. 1917 was an appalling year for the RWK, with the 6th battalion nearly wiped out at the battle of Cambrai in November. The 7th battalion was overwhelmed on 21st March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offiensive, but the 8th battalion stood before Amiens, helping to turn the tide of war on the western front. The 6th, 7th and 8th battalions took part in the Allied counter-offensives which led to the Armistice in November.
