Les Lettres de la Religieuse Portugaise (1669) sont attribuées traditionnellement à Mariana Alcoforado, religieuse portugaise, bien que des érudits modernes aient établi que le texte est probablement une fiction épistolaire française. Retains the full Japanese Taisho-era colophon of the original Tokyo issue (printed Feb. 15, 1922; issued Feb. 20, 1922; sales office Nishi-Sugamo; printer Koishikawa), together with a Korean distribution notice by the Youth Buddhist Education Association dated Buddhist Era 2522 (April 1979). Classical Chinese text in vertical double-column kanbun setting. Front blank with a handsome brush inscription and red name seal; later neat date "3-20-92" on a rear blank with owner's name. Internally clean; paper shows the even, intentional stock toning typical of the series. Boards bright with only light shelf evidence; no spotting. A solid, study-worthy copy of a key primary source for East Asian Yog?c?ra thought, uncommon with both the original Tokyo colophon and the 1979 Korean association leaf present.

Binding and interior are sound. A sensation upon its publication in 1669, this epistolary work of fiction has had its authorship disputed over the centuries. Here attributed to Alcoforado, many scholars believe de la Vergne to be the real author. Albert Camus does clear things up a little in The Fall, declaring, "I was not the Portuguese nun.".

Napoleon I ranked him among the seven greatest generals in history. The full set comprises 5 volumes with an engraved portrait by Schmidt and 12 folded military maps and battle plans. EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE: Manuscript inscription on title page: "à la Bibliothèque des Capucins de Valenciennes, le 24 avril 1769" ? recording entry into the library of the Capuchin Convent of Valenciennes (France) on 24 April 1769, less than 15 years after publication. Attributed to the Irish poet and barrister Samuel Ferguson (1810-1886). Though unnamed in this edition, the "anti-preface" by American novelist Frederic S. Cozzens quotes from a letter from the unnamed author: "[Father Tom and the Pope] was written by me in the summer of 1838, just about the time of my call to the Irish Bar. No one else had any hand in it.I have never made any secret of the authorship, but as I have constantly endeavored in any literary work I have been able to do for many years back to elevate the Irish subject out of the burlesque, I have an indisposition to place my name on the title-page of so very rollicking a piece as Father Tom" (p. vii). 17th-century gilded morocco binding [ca. 20 x 14 cm] decorated with a wide gilt-tooled "fanfare-style" border featuring fleurs-de-lis and floral motifs. The corners are accented with fine, naturalistic animal tools: the upper corners feature gilt-tooled stags (deer) in profile, and the lower corners feature gilt-tooled hares (rabbits); spine with raised bands and gilt title. 136 unnumbered leaves. With 40 woodcut illustrations, including a large nearly full-page woodcut of a King (Louis XI) in council, the title, and numerous woodcut initials. Title page printed in red and black with a large woodcut illustration of a courtly scene. The very rare 1532 edition of this famous collection of French short stories. Modeled after Boccaccios Decameron, the Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles were traditionally attributed to Antoine de la Sale and said to have been collected at the court of Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy. The stories are celebrated for their wit, gallantry, and sharp satirical look at 15th-century society, particularly the clergy and the bourgeoisie. This edition by Olivier Arnoullet is notable for its charming Lyonnaise woodcuts, which capture the lively and often scandalous nature of the prose. Its significance lies in its secular realism. Unlike earlier medieval exempla designed to teach a moral lesson, these stories were written purely for entertainment (joyeuseté). They offer a vividand often crudesnapshot of 15th-century life, focusing on the cunning of women, the hypocrisy of the clergy, and the "gallantry" of the nobility. Historically, it is considered the first great work of French prose fiction: "sometimes falsely attributed to Antoine de la Sale, was composed at the request of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, around 1462, by a court writer, perhaps Philippe Pot. Several Burgundian lords, for their own amusement, take turns telling bawdy stories, full of revelry, amorous contests, feints, and wordplay, which form a sequel to Boccaccio's Decameron and foreshadow the tales of the 16th century.
