Er studierte ab 1822 an der Münchner Kunstakademie bei Friedrich von Gärtner. Später war Voit Leiter der Obersten Baubehörde in der Staatsbauverwaltung. August von Voit wandte in seinen Bauten mit Vorliebe den romanischen Stil an. Zu seinen Arbeiten gehören u.a. das Hambacher Schloss, die neue Pinakothek in München, das Rathaus in Annweiler am Trifels, das chemische Laboratorium für Justus von Liebig in München, der Glaspalast in München, die Stadtpfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt in Weißenhorn, die Lutherkirche in Ludwigshafen, die Lutherische Stadtkirche St. Andreas in Selb, die Fruchthalle in Kaiserslautern, die Katholische Pfarrkirche St. Martin in Waldsee, die Pfarrkirche St. Michael in Homburg, die Synagoge in Rülzheim und die Kirche St. Ludwig in Speyer.
