Ajouter au panierIllustrated wrappers. Series: Biblioteka novitn?oi literatury. 125 pages. Text in Ukrainian. A fair copy with the inscription in pen on the title page. The novella "Morituri," authored by the Ukrainian poet, prose writer, and political figure Ivan Bahrianyi (19061963), sheds light on the harrowing experiences of prisoners in Stalinist prisons. Despite enduring Stalinist repression himself, Bahriany's literary contributions remain relatively obscure in his homeland. "Morituri," presumably, published in 1947 by the DP publishing house "Prometheus," is part of the author's autobiographical collection, delving into themes of imprisonment and the Gulag system. Often regarded as a precursor to his novel "Gethsemane Garden," this work captures the essence of Bahriany's poignant narrative style. "Morituri" is a Latin word that translates to "those who are about to die" in English.

First edition; 7 1/2 x 5 1/2; pp. [8], 11-203, [3]; light-brown wraps, printed in red and black and illustrated with a small vignette; small nicks and creases to tips of spine; a bit of wear to corners of wraps; in very good condition.Ivan Bahrianyi, pseudonym for Ivan Pavlovych Lozoviahin (1906 - 1963) was a Ukrainian author, poet, educator, and politician. His poetry collection "Ave Maria," published in 1929, was immediately deemed inappropriate by the government censorship, forbidden, and pulled from the bookstores. Between 1932 and 1938, he was arrested several times for "counter-revolutionary propaganda" and spent time in NKVD prisons and labor camps. Bahrianyi emigrated to Germany at the end of the Second World War, where he edited the journal "Ukrainski visti," the latter also the publisher of the current book. He founded the Ukrainian Revolutionary Democratic Party in 1948 and, for a time, was Deputy President of the Ukrainian People's Republic in exile. His "Fiery Circle" told the story of the Battle of Brody in 1944, between the Division Galizien of the Ukrainian National Army and the advancing Soviet Army during the Lviv-Sandomierz Operation.

Ajouter au panierThis beautifully illustrated large-format second edition of Ivan Bahrianyi's [Fairy Tale about the Storks and Pavlyk the Traveler] was published in 1958 as part of post-war Ukrainian émigré literature. Designed as a "gift for the little ones," it features vibrant depictions of Pavlyk's adventures with animals, with cover design and illustrations by the author himself. A charming example of Bahrianyi's creativity, this edition reflects the cultural preservation efforts of the Ukrainian diaspora. Ivan Bahrianyi (19061963), born Ivan Pavlovych Lozoviaha, was a prominent Ukrainian writer, essayist, and political figure. He was arrested in 1932 for alleged "counter-revolutionary propaganda" and spent years in Soviet labor camps before resuming his literary work. Drawing on his experiences, Bahrianyi wrote notable works such as "The Tiger Trappers" (1944) and "Garden of Gethsemane" (1950). During World War II, he joined the Ukrainian nationalist underground and later relocated to Germany, where he continued his political and literary activities. In 1948, Bahrianyi founded the Ukrainian Revolutionary Democratic Party and edited the newspaper "Ukrains'ki visti" until his death. His pamphlet "Why I am not going back to the Soviet Union?" voiced his opposition to Soviet rule. Posthumously awarded the Shevchenko Prize in 1992, Bahrianyi remains a significant figure in Ukrainian literature and politics.
