Paperback. Etat : Good. If I could only have been there . . . Did you ever wish you could have been among those who actually encountered Jesus in person; mingled, perhaps, with those throngs beside the lake; feasted among the five thousand in a Galilean meadow; crowded along the village street as the carpenter from Nazareth passed by? This month of daily meditations seeks to accomplish just that; to place readers in the ways that Jesus walked; to assist those who pray or meditate their way across this thirty-day selection to experience the many moments of Jesus's ministry as narrated in the gospels, through the eyes and minds, the hearts and emotions of folk-ordinary folk for the most part- whose lives were touched and transformed as Jesus walked their way. For Lent, or Advent, or for any season of spiritual renewal, Faces by the Wayside can set you once again in the presence of the Master.…

Etat : Good. As Hallowe'en draws near, 10-year-old Bridget Anne, nicknamed Dragonfly, hears unearthly noises drifting up from the basement of her Uncle Henry's funeral home. Impetuously jumping down a laundry chute to satisfy her curiosity, Dragonfly finds herself in the subterranean land of Harvest Moon, where morning never comes, where autumn leaves never desert the trees - for it is constantly Hallowe'en night. Threading her way through this perilous realm of monsters, vampires, werewolves, and worse, Dragonfly must find a way to rescue the human children imprisoned by Harvest Moon's dark masters - and to thwart an invasion of the surface world. Primarily for adults, Dragonfly may also be enjoyed by precocious younger listeners. It is a story told in celebration of the wonder, nostalgia, and eerie delight of childhood Hallowe'ens, when jack-o'-lanterns flicker and things go bump in the night.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. Will McTeer was one of more than two million soldiers who fought to preserve the Union during the Civil War years of 1861-1865. He was not looking for a fight. He did so because he loved his country and what it represented and because he feared the Confederacy - an idea with which he, his family, and his community disagreed. McTeer grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee, a state that seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy, although it did so reluctantly. McTeer might just have easily sided with the rest of his state, put aside his allegiances, and cast his lot with the Confederacy. Many others did. McTeer did not. In 1862, when McTeer made his way past Confederate patrols, traveled to the Cumberland Gap, and joined what became the Third Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, the end of the war and its outcome was by no means certain. Had the Confederacy prevailed, he might have become an outcast - or even a traitor - unable to return to his beloved mountains. McTeer took that risk, as did many other sons of the South, and the nation owes all those like him a huge debt of gratitude. In this book, McTeer gives us what we find all too rarely: a detailed, exciting, but modest account of his actions and his reasons for taking those actions. He remembers his friends and neighbors with whom he fought. Many of them returned home to live active and productive lives. Many of them did not. McTeer does not dwell on justifications or rationalizations. The reasons he gave three years of his life to his country are self-evident to him, and he assumes, rightly so, that they should be self-evident to others. *** This book is published as part of the Blount County Public Library's Southern Appalachian Studies Editions. These editions are produced and marketed by the Blount Country Friends of the Library. More information about other titles in this series can be found elsewhere in this book. Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Blessed is the nation that in the course of a century could give the world two poets of Czeslaw Milosz's and Zbigniew Herbert's scope. Doubly blessed is the English-reader, for in this volume he gets Zbigniew Herbert's work rendered by Czeslaw Milosz: like the poor, or better yet like nature herself, Polish genius takes care of its own. This collection is bound for a much longer haul than any of us can anticipate. For Zbigniew Herbert's poetry adds to the biography of civilization the sensibility of a man not defeated by the century that has been most thorough, most effective in dehumanization of the species. Herbert's irony, his austere reserve and his compassion, the lucidity of his lyricism, the intensity of his sentiment toward classical antiquity, are not just trappings of a modern poet, but the necessary armor--in his case well-tempered and shining indeed--for man not to be crushed by the onslaught of reality. By offering to his readers neither aesthetic norethical discount, this poet, in fact, saves them frorn that poverty which every form of human eviI finds so congenial. As long as the species exists, this book will be timely.-- Joseph Brodsky.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Aspects of Love is a book for those - worn out by cynicism - fatigued by sensory assault - wearied by the drive to experience new thrills - made fragile by the trivial - sickened by a lack of spiritual depth In a world that longs for intimacy, this book casts a long ray of hope. J. Barrie Shepherd offers the loving gift of gentle, unhurried reflection on 1 Corinthians 13. He frames his thoughtful reflections in three parts: The Necessity of Love, The Qualities of Love, and The Endurance of Love. Writing with the poet's sensitivity toward language and rhythm, Shepherd uses verses of scripture from 1 Corinthians 13 to examine facets of love, including communication, irritability, kindness, jealousy, humility, forgiveness happiness, and hope. He draws from the works of Golda Meir, Paul Tournier, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Winston Churchhill and closes each chapter with a prayer. God can dazzle us with the magnificance of the universe. But the heart of the universe reveals its glory in the compassion, grace, and love that come to us when we need it most, telling us, . You matter. --J. Barrie Shepherd The Reverend Dr. J. Barrie Shepherd, a native of Great Britain, retired as Minister Emeritus from The First Presbyterian Church in New York City. Prior to that he was senior minister of Swarthmore Presbyterian Church for sixteen years and served in college and university chaplaincy and teaching. He has preached and lectured at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke and other universities and colleges and many of the major seminaries, as well as in distinguished pulpits across the USA and in the UK, Europe and Africa. The author is an avid saltwater fisherman and sailor. He enjoys swimming, walking, gardening and playing the euphonium in community bands.
