Using the framework of recent social and cultural theory, it reflects the fact that risk has become integral to contemporary understandings of selfhood, the body and social relations, and is central to the work of writers such as Douglas, Beck, Giddens and the Foucauldian theorists. The contributors are all leading scholars in the fields of sociology, cultural and media studies and cultural anthropology. Combining empirical analyses with metatheoretical critiques, they tackle an unusually diverse range of topics including drug use, risk in the workplace, fear of crime and the media, risk and pregnant embodiment, the social construction of danger in childhood, anxieties about national identity, the governmental uses of risk and the relationship between risk phenomena and social order. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

First Edition. 212 pages including index + prelims & colour frontispiece. Green cloth boards. Boards faded by sunlight across the top and down spine junctions to front and rear board in a wide band. Backstrip of spine is detached and faded - inact with some wear at spine ends but will need to be restuck. Page ends are rough cut as of period. Endpapers lightly browned with age. However binding is strong, text is unimpeded and very clean. Book is illustrated with very attractive full page plates in b&w / two-tone by Charles Bathurst. Internally very nice condition.

The dedication is to the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. A fold-out chart has the distances of towns and bridges on two rivers between London and Oxford. It also has a chart about high water times at London Bridge. The last pages have 30 b/w figures; a few others are in text. There is an index and an errata page. A 30 page section is titled Miscellaneous Memoranda. It has comments about fishing, dogs and other animals, God, and the Bible. The spine strip has been loose and is reattached on the reverse side with cloth tape. Some of the pages' margins have foxing. Scans e-mailed upon request.
