"A New Edition." (as specified upon title page; Collates as [fp], [frontis], 1-24, Plates 1-99, [rfep], [rp]. Hardcover: H 14.25cm x L 12cm. Contemporary full leather; front board detached; slender splitting to rear joint/hinge but board remains reasonably firm; boards rubbed with wear and peeling at edges; spine had four slightly raised bands but with ends chipped; spine does not have a title label but no remnants nor residual impression hinting at its past presence. Antiquarian ink signature on front pastedown -fp immediately opposite frontispiece recto so missing its ffep; two-line antiquarian ink inscription (different individual than fp) "John Hillkirk-Beswick near | Manchester Wales Works - 1821" at top of title page; horizontal tear to Plate 70; varied interior foxing/toning and some staining. Title page specifies 100 plates - all plates present compared to an intact microfilmed copy which too had Plates 1-99 plus frontispiece. Text block remains firm. Book is now presented in a trimmed Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids in securing the boards and modestly enhances shelf presence. Sold as is for the book could use a binder's attention.
