William Beach Thomas attended Shrewsbury School from 1882. As a keen sportsman he was soon appointed huntsman to the Royal Shrewsbury School Hunt. Later, after several teaching jobs which he rather disliked, he became employed by the Daily Mail as a writer of countryside material. During World War I Thomas was sent by the newspaper to France as a War correspondent and it is this for which he became best known. Following the War he got back to writing about the English countryside, authoring and contributed to a great many books on the subject. Contents include: Part 1: The General Scene - The meet; The antiquity of fox-hunting; The face of England; Historic headquarters; The quarry; Where the deer survive; Part 2: The Chief Hunting-Grounds - The Border to York; Flamborough Head to The Wash; East Anglian hunts; The Shires to-day; About the Cotswolds; The Western Midlands. .
