Paperback. Etat : Good. For the first twenty-three years of her life, Suzy Becker was sure she would have at least two babies. Then it took another fifteen years to decide to go ahead and have just one. One Good Egg is the funny, warmhearted story of her journey to fertility and becoming a mom, illustrated throughout with hundreds of her clever and charming cartoons.Suzy Becker found professional success in her twenties, and by her thirties, she decided she had everything she needed?the home, the savings, the friends, the family, and the gumption?to have a baby alone. At age thirty-nine, she joined the ranks of the six million women who need medical help to conceive. In One Good Egg, she chronicles her travels through the maze of fertility treatments, constantly considering and reconsidering how far she was willing to go, inwardly convinced none of it would ever work. She learned she was pregnant on her way to tape an essay for NPR, and five months later married her true love. You cannot adequately prepare for certain realities, like giving birth or parenthood, but with One Good Egg, Suzy Becker provides the perfect companion for her readers? own journeys to motherhood and beyond. …

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Infused with Helaine Becker's trademark wit and irrepressible energy, Science on the Loose encourages young readers to release their inner scientist so that they can think, do, and learn in the most entertaining way possible. Whether it's to test density in fruit, determine dominant genes, or make slimy goo, each experiment follows accepted scientific procedure, is easy to conduct, can be safely performed using ordinary household materials, and makes for a satisfying, surprising adventure in science. Each experiment features a "What's Going On?" component that explains the science behind the results in a clear and concise way, so even when an experiment just feels like silly fun, children are learning about chemistry, climate change, genes, the senses, photosynthesis, the scientific method -- even Einstein's Theory of Relativity. From fooling our senses to discovering whether Jell-o can have brain waves to creating ice cream by kicking a can, Science on the Loose feeds into children's natural curiosity about the world around them. A helpful listing outlines all the scientific principles covered in the book -- an indispensable tool for teachers and a mark of a serious science book for parents. Claudia Dávila's amusing illustrations strike the perfect note. Dávila, Claudia (illustrateur). …

Hardback. Etat : Good. McSweeney's Quarterly Concern has been printing issues since 1998, and sending them into the world with reckless faith. Now and then, the world writes back. In two decades and change, we've accumulated a heady archive of dispatches, pleas, confessions, treatises, ruminations, rants, raves, and the occasional misdirected customer service query. Collected here are one hundred installments from this sprawling many-to-one correspondence, including but not limited to musings on moths and mummies and macaroons, cats and armadillos and homicidal sea worms, and the arcana of Jerry Lewis's acting career. By turns poignant and absurd, these letters are a sparkling glimpse into the strange and unforgettable lives of McSweeney's readers. Featuring letters by Sarah Vowell, Brandon Hobson, R.O. Kown, Jonathan Lethem, Jenny Odell, Hanif Abdurraqib, Julie Klausner, Thao Nguyen, Ana Marie Cox, Jason Polan, and dozens more. …

Paperback. Etat : Good. It Began with Huntley DrinkleyBy: Janny Becker What is it that can hold our lives away from disaster? And what happens when disaster finds us anyway? How do we survive? This memoir describes the author's experience of successfully managing the potential devastation of bipolar disorder and alcoholism and is a model for approximately five million adult Americans with this syndrome. It is also a guide for anyone trying to live with their life obstacles, rather than running away from them. Presented as a story rooted in a seemingly innocent practice in her family during the late 1950s, it shows twists and turns that can lead one life toward the edge of devastation, and to find its bearings again. When she was twelve years old, she was allowed to join the family in their cocktail hour as they watched NBC News with Chet Huntley and David Brinkley every evening . At their house this time was known as Huntley Drinkley. Her parents' philosophy was that if her sister and she were allowed to drink with them, they would not experiment with alcohol outside their home where they might get into trouble . In reality what happened was her sister and she became daily drinkers like their parents, doing Huntley Drinkley every evening for years . The danger of that pattern, along with a diagnosis in early adulthood of bipolar disorder, sent her on a parallel path of high professional performance and a secret spiral downward, until she almost hit bottom. The conditions that can lead a person there, and save them, are the heart of this animated story of hope, self-love and resilience .This book pulls on professional and personal experiences as a person who has succeeded in living a productive and interesting life, while managing alcoholism and bipolar disorder. Becker's experiences are shared to encourage others that both diseases are treatable and if treatment is followed, chances are good for not just a good life but for a special life. About the AuthorJanny Becker was raised in the State of Washington in Walla Walla until ten years old and in Spokane thereafter until at age eighteen, she went off to college at the University of Washington in Seattle . In the summer between her freshman and sophomore years she was privileged to get an internship in the US Senate which became a turning point in her life. She stayed at the U ofW to her junior year and then transferred to Columbia University in NYC to study in a specialized program for Occupational Therapy in Mental Health. She did her psychiatric internship at Chestnut Lodge in Rockville, Maryland, where she began to develop a good base for her work in the years to come. After graduation from Columbia in 1968, she went to work at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York for the next four years. In 1972 she moved to Seattle and continued her career at the University of Washington in Seattle on the psychiatric in-patient unit.Over the next period of time she worked in the public system and when she had twenty-one years of experience, she opened her own private outpatient agency. In 1975, she met a man who was involved in politics and eventually married him. They were together 20 years. In 1977 she got into recovery from alcoholism and has been successful in living a good life in sobriety since.…

The poems in 2nd Chance are written in the voice of a doctor; the speaker often imagines he is talking to students, residents, patients, families?anyone who is ill or has witnessed illness and suffering. The poet, Daniel M. Becker, has been a physician for over thirty years, working in general medicine, geriatric clinics, and addiction clinics, supervising medical students and residents, and more. With poems such as ?Goals of Care,? ?Before Flu Season,? and ?Advance Directives,? 2nd Chance covers the full spectrum of medical care?birth, death, and all the surprising moments in between. Hardback. Etat : Good. Cody and her boyfriend, James, were two of the lucky babies from the 1 percent of the US population who were randomly selected to benefit from genetic engineering. Now she and the rest of the Ones are excelling. They aren't otherworldly, just perfect. The Equality Movement capitalises on this growing fear and jealousy and gains enough political traction to outlaw their existence. The line between right and wrong blurs in the face of injustice, and Cody becomes closer to a group of radical Ones intent on fighting back, while James begins to fear just how far she is willing to go for the cause. Thought provoking, thrilling, and complex, the first in this explosive new young adult series will appeal to fans of Divergent and The Fifth Wave.…

Hardback. Etat : Fair. Feeding time is one of the most popular events at zoos. It also prompts a smorgasbord of questions: what do different animals eat? How much food do they need to stay healthy? Where do zookeepers get all that chow? And what constitutes a special treat? Worms for Breakfast answers all these questions and more in a cookbook-style primer packed with facts from experts at zoos and aquariums. Covering everything from regular animal nutrition to feeding babies to mimicking how animals hunt and eat in the wild, this book explores the eating habits of carnivores, omnivores, herbivores, and insectivores. Inside, you'll also find real-life recipes from zoos around the world for meals like eucalyptus-leaf pesto, kelp tank goulash, and mealworm mush. Beware! You probably don't want to eat any of it yourself. Written in a plucky, conversational tone with delightfully wacky illustrations, a glossary, and tips for zoo animal care, this book is bound to appeal to picky readers. Boake, Kathy (illustrateur).…

Hardback. Etat : Good.

From rocking chair to room, from room to house, neighborhood, state, country, world, solar system--and back--the story satisfies the explorer in every young child, introducing a universe of wonder where all belong. This multicultural story depicts a Latino-Anglo family and the son's Black friend in a world of many cultures and races. How to learn geography through detailed illustrations giving children the fun of finding a red wooden swing in every picture, and of identifying miniature landmarks and animals of mid-Atlantic states, the US, the world, and even the solar system. As the sleepy child explores even further with a telescope, he leaves his stuffed bunny on the red swing, until Dad spots the missing one and reunites them. The book ends back in the rocking chair again, because you belong in my lap in the old rocking chair that sits in the room at the top of the stair. Becker, Sally (illustrateur). …
