Girolamo Savonarola, O.P., 1452-1498; Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), 1431-1503. `Savonarola's death as a martyr, albeit a controversial one, has given to history one of its unforgettable pictures. The character of the victim and the issues at stake in his quarrel with the Pope are likely always to be discussed, but no one will be found to deny the essential goodness and purity of his vision in those dark days for the Church, nor the quality of the spiritual inspiration and zeal which enabled him to dedicate his adopted city to Christ the King--the divine title which Pius XI has made so popular in our own day of post-Christian denial of any sovereignty on earth save that of the so-called will of the people, however manipulated and travestied.' Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. This is "The Meddlesome Friar and the Wayward Pope" by Michael De La Bedoyere. The book was published in 1958 by Hanover House in Garden City, NY. The company is no longer in operation; nor is the Convent from which the book came. The following is excerpted from the dust-jacket write-up : "One of history's most fascinating duels was the struggle to the death between Savonarola andPope Alexander VI. Sometimes thought of as the simple story of a good man and a bad man, it was actually much more complex -- and interesting -- than that. Alexander VI has lived through the ages as the personification of ecclesiastical corruption, but in Count de la Bedoyere's balanced portrait he emerges rather as a typically worldly prelate of the heady, flamboyant Renaissance, a man with serious failings but also with many redeeming qualities. He was certainly not innocent of the sis of the flesh (among his four illegitimate children were two of the most famous of the Borgias - Lucrezia and Cesare), but neither was he the sensual monster of popular fancy. ********************************************* "Yet to Savonarola, a Dominican friar who was the prototype of the severe, zealous reformer, Alexander seemed devil in disguise. Inevitably they clashed. The friar was convinced that it was his mission to make Florence and all of Italy into earthly images of the kingdom of heaven. But how, when in Peter's Chair sat a licentious clerical politician? For at the time the Pope was not only head of the Church, but temporal ruler of central Italy, and sometimes the latter role seemed more important. Alexander, no Grand Inquisitor, did his best to look the other way. When he finally felt to obliged to act, his first move was moderate enough : He asked Savonarola to come to Rome to answer charges. The friar tried every dodge, first disingenuously, then defiantly. As the net closed about him, he grew desperate and took more extreme positions, ultimately questioning the Pope's authority. And then the climax. It ended suddenly, in a burst of violence, heroism, barbarism . and sanctity. Recreating this conflict in such broad vivid strokes, Michael de la Bedoyere has given us a memorable slice of Renaissance life." ******************************************* TITLE : The Meddlesome Friar and the Wayward Pope - the Story of the Conflict between Savonarola and Alexander VI / AUTHOR : Michael de la Bedoyere ( Count Michael Anthony Maurice de la Bédoyère, 1900 1973) / IMPRINT : Hanover House / PLACE : Garden City, NY / DATE : 1958 / EDITION : Unstated [ But likely Second Printing ] / STATUS : OP / PROVENANCE : X LIB - From the St. Elizabeth Hospital Convent - no longer existing.
