Ajouter au panierHardcover. x, [1], 150, [1] p.; 23 cm. 1050 copies printed at Cambridge U. Press in Poliphilus fount on laid paper. (Farrar & Evans 667) `Choosing a wife. Do you wish your wife to be faithful to you? Then you keep faith with her. There are many who want to take wives, and cannot find them. Do you know why? Because the man will say:I want a wise woman, while all the time he himself is a fool. That is not right. Fool must wed with fool. And you, what kind of a wife do you want? Oh, a tall one, you say. And you are a snippet. That's no good. There is a certain country where the women find husbands according to their height. And there was a man of this country who wished to take a wife, and wanted to see her first.when they measured her she was taller than any other girl in the place. Finally they asked him: Well, do you like her? And he answered: Yes, I like her very much. But the girl, seeing he was such a little nobody, said: Well, I don't like you. And that was a good one for him. Well,to return to our subject. How do you want your wife to be? You want her honest. And you yourself are dishonest. Again, what kind of a wife do you want? A temperate one.And you yourself are never seen outside the tavern. You won't find one to your taste. What do you want? A peaceable wife. And you are a man who would pick a quarrel with a straw if it pricked your foot inthe road. And what wife do you want? An obedient one. Andyet youhave never obeyed your mother or your father or any other person. You don't deserve one. Finally, what wife do you want? Oh, one that is good and beautiful and wise.that has all the virtues.Well,I tell you that if you want such a one so you must be yourself, for if you expect her tobe virtuous good and beautiful, be sure she will expect the same of you.' Steiner (1840-1906), a Georgia physician, planter, folklorist, and amateur archaeologist, whose excavation of the Etowah mounds near Macon, Georgia, form the core of the largest collection of artifacts from a single individual to have been donated to the Smithsonian ; with his bookplate ; "During the latter half of the 19th century and into the early part of the 20th century, Roland collected a massive quantity of prehistoric artifacts from areas throughout Georgia; including Mound C at the Etowah Mound site near Cartersville, Georgia and sites in Burke, Columbia, Floyd, Hancock, and several other counties. He became a member of the Georgia Historical Society on July 7, 1886, the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1899 and the Society of American Folklore in the same year. In his lifetime, Roland collected more than 100,000 Native American relics from Georgia and South Carolina. Throughout the 1890s and early part of the 1910s, Steiner sent approximately 78,000 artifacts including copper axes, copper headdresses, conch shell cups and gorgets, pearl beads, pottery vessels, pottery statuettes, and other artifacts made of polished and chipped stone to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. His private collection at the Smithsonian is the largest private collection in the museum. Steiner also has collection of artifacts located at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, New York and the Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois." ; "Dr. Steiner has been, for about three years, at intervals, making deposits of aboriginal implements and objects in the National Museum. His collection amounts now to approximately 75,000 objects. They have been gathered by him in eastern Georgia, principally in Columbia and Burke Counties, though there is a very important collection made by himself from the Etowah Mounds in Bartow County. Not the least inconsiderable portion of Dr. Steiner's collection, nor that of least value, is the result of his own excavation at the Etowah Mounds or, as they have been known, the Tumlin Mounds on the plantation of Col. Tumlin, Etowah Creek, Bartow County. These are probably the most renowned mounds of which we know, and have produced the rarest and most curious objects. It appears to me of the highest necessity that we should retain the objects from this mound that belong to Dr. Steiner, to the end that they may supplement the collection of Prof. Thomas. I would consider it almost an irreparable loss, one not to be calculated in dollars and cents, if the objects belonging to Dr. Steiner should be taken away and the collection from the Etowah Mound broken up. The purchase of this collection from Dr. Steiner will materially facilitate the complete excavation of the Etowah Mounds and insure to the Museum the possession of their riches in its entirety."--Thomas Wilson, Curator, Division of Prehistoric Anthropology, January 19, 1898. ; contributors included Nicasio Juan Gallego (1777-1853), Francisco Maria Raynouard, Taver John Nicols, Marie-Charles-Joseph Pougens (1755-1833), Jacob Pontusson De la Gardie, Robert Southey (1774-1843), Guy Arnault, Felix Torres Amat (1772-1857), Joseph del Castillo, Jose Maria Zuaznavar y Fracia, Alberto Rodríguez de Lista y Aragón (1775-1848), Romanillos Benito Ortega, Manuel López Cepero y Ardila (1778-1858), and others ; G, scarce. Saint Bernardine of Siena, (1380-1444; canonised 1450; feast day May 20), Franciscan theologian and preacher of great eloquence who, with Saints John of Capistrano and James of the March, led the growth of the Observants, a strict branch of the Franciscan order that subsequently spread throughout Europe. Bernardine became a priest in 1404 but did not begin his renowned preaching tours through Italy until 1417. Appalled by the breakdown in morals, the lawlessness, and the civil strife that resulted from the Great Western Schism, he strove to restore morals by inculcating a deep personal love of Jesus Christ. Ajouter au panierVellum. Etat : Very Good Indeed. First edition. A lovely limited edition copy on the life of Bernardino of Siena, containing moral lessons attributed to him, bound in vellum and signed by artist Robert Austin with numerous illustrated engravings. First Limited Edition, being No. 55 of one-hundred and five copies that were printed on handmade paper and bound in a full vellum binding.Signed by the artist Robert Austin (1895-1973) to the limited edition statement page. Austin was considered to be one of Britain's leading twentieth century printmakers, alongside his illustrating, engraving, and currency designs.Illustrated with a frontispiece, an engraved title page, three full-page engravings, and twenty-three in-text engravings by Austin. This is a wonderful biographical account of Bernardino of Siena (1380-1444) the Italian priest and Franciscan missionary, which also contains many of his sermons and moral tales. Bernardino was canonised by the Catholic Church and is sometimes referred to as the 'Apostle of Italy' because of his efforts to revive Catholicism in the 15th century. He is the patron saint of advertising, communications, compulsive gambling, respiratory problems, 'as well as any problems involving the chest area', and the patron saint of Carpi, Italy.Contents include 'Bernardino in his Times', 'Bernardino the Franciscan', as well as 'Examples of San Bernardino', containing sermons like 'The Vanity of Woman', 'A New Method of Teaching', 'A Canine Saint', and 'The Malice of Party Men'.Written and collected by Ada Harrison (1899-1958), a South African writer who spent most of her life within London. Harrison published various works on Italy, and was also the wife of Robert Austin, who she met during her travels in Italy. With an institutional bookplate to front paste down belonging to the Brooklyn Public Library, as well as a prior owner's bookplate belonging to John M. Cameron.Collated, complete. Bound in the publisher's original full vellum binding. Externally, excellent, with minimal wear to extremities and just a bit of age-toning to spine and boards, with a few spots. Illustrated bookplates to front paste down, with age-toning and a few spots to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very clean throughout, and are just lightly age-toned. The odd institutional mark, with an inscription to the corner of one of the plates, which does not affect the image. Very Good Indeed. Robert Austin (illustrateur). book.…
