They present opportunities…for study of the historical and geographical movements of typographical ideas and influences. The books include examples of the work of the best paper-makers, type designers, typographers and printers, as well as those artists who concerned themselves with book illustration In terms of history and geography the catalogue traces the influence of William Morris and the arts and crafts movement as it spread into Europe. It was Morris' example which sparked off the renaissance in German printing, even if the earliest private presses in that country leant more heavily on Cobden-Sanderson's style. Then, too, Beardsley and the Art Nouveau movement can be said to have led to the establishment of Jugendstil in Germany. We are particularly glad to have the chance of listing more examples of German printing than are usually met with in booksellers' catalogues in the English-speaking world, for we believe that in the period with which we are here concerned much of the best work has emanated from Germany." From the introduction: "The books, pamphlets and posters brought together in this Great War catalogue overwhelmingly concern the experience of the British army on the Western Front, whether in military, social or literary terms. Books and pamphlets about the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Navy as well as theatres of operation other than the Western Front are included, but numerically are less significant. There are a few significant books dealing with the French and German experience of the Great War. The bias within this catalogue reflects the military and literary experience of the British people. The majority of men and women who volunteered or were conscripted served in the army, and most of them saw active service on the Western Front So purely in statistical terms one would expect this service and geographic concentration to be reflected in such a catalogue. But the particular nature of the experience of service on the Western Front encouraged thousands of men and women to write during and after the war on a scale of intensity which was not the case for those who served in the navy or in other theatres of operation. A vast citizen army, many of whom were highly literate, kept diaries, wrote letters, compiled verse and popular songs, a lot of which was eventually to be published." Very Good.
