Cloth. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. Hand-signed inscription by the author on the first blank endpage, which states: "To René & Cecil with love from Maurice. 3. ix. 36. Significance: This copy is made particularly special by the hand-signed dedication from the author, addressed to two figures of notable artistic prominence: René Gruau, the celebrated fashion illustrator, and Cecil Beaton, the iconic photographer and designer. The inscription not only adds rarity but adds a connection to the vibrant artistic and literary circles of the 1930's, where these three creative minds intersected. - The artistic circles of Europe during this period were relatively intimate, with contributors from the worlds of fashion, photography, and literature often collaborating or inspiring one another through exhibitions, publications, and social gatherings. About the Author and the Book: Maurice Bethell Jones was a British writer and illustrator whose works captured the glamour and sophistication of his time. A talented fashion illustrator, he transitioned into literature, where his narrative style mirrored his artistic sensibility—elegant, insightful, and often satirical. Queen to Chanticleer, his second novel, was published in 1936 and is both a sharp societal commentary and a reflection of the era's wit and charm. The book explores themes of human ambition, vanity, and social interplay, with a tone that is simultaneously humorous and thought-provoking. For collectors, this is a rare opportunity to own not only a piece of literary history but also a unique artefact tied to some of the most creative minds of the 20th century. - Condition & Description: The book is housed in its original dust jacket, showing some wear consistent with its age. There are a few chips to the edges, light creasing, and soiling to the lighter areas. The red cloth boards are sturdy, with white lettering to the spine, though some spotting is present. The binding remains tight and secure. The endpages are browned, and foxing is visible throughout the text, reflecting its vintage nature. 323 pages. - END - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it.
