Hard Cover. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. Includes slipcase and Sandglass insert Number VIII:33. Page ridges faintly foxed. 1967 Hard Cover. xiv, 80 pp. Translated from the German of Richard Voxx by Gustav Adolf Danziger and adapted by Ambrose Bierce. With an introduction by Maurice Valency and illustrations by Michel Ciry. A knot of monks happens upon a gallows in the middle of a dark forest. Hanging from the gallows is a fresh corpse, and underneath the dangling wretch a young woman performs a haunting dance. When Ambrosius falls in love with this outcast woman, his efforts to suppress his natural feelings result in a gradual descent toward calamity and tragedy. Bierce?s subtle transformation of the monk Ambrosius from innocent monk to violent zealot is masterfully done, ranking this among Bierce?s finest achievements.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Michel Ciry (illustrateur). Near Fine Slip Case. No Dust Jacket, As Issued. xiv (ii), 80 pp, introduction, preface by Ambrose Bierce, list of 8 color illustrations, The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter. With an Introduction by Maurice Valency, 1967. "The story adapted by Ambrose Bierce, was a translation (1890) by Adolphe Danziger De Castro (b. Gustav Adolf Danziger), a journalist, lawyer, scholar, and an author of poems, novels and short stories. For his part, De Castro's version is translated into English the story 'Der Mönch von Berchtesgaden' (The Monk of Berchtesgaden), by a German novelist Richard Voss, which had been published in a German monthly magazine in 1891. De Castro, then, contracted Ambrose Bierce, who supported his literary aspirations in the late 19th century, requesting that he edit the story. It was published as 'The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter', first in serial form in a San Francisco newspaper in 1891 then republished as a book in 1892."
