"William Michael Rossetti's experience of the Pre-Raphaelites and their world appeared in several different forms at different times of his life. For this personal history I have drawn mainly on his Some Reminiscences, published in 1906 when he was seventy-seven, into which I have dovetailed passages from his Memoir of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, published in 1895. The section entitled 'The PRB Journal' is taken from the diary that William Rossetti kept on behalf of the brotherhood from 1849 to 1853, and 'Dante Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal' makes generous use of an article he contributed to the Burlington Magazine in 1903. Rather than interpret the flow of the narrative unduly, I have chosen not to indicate individual sources and excisions within the text. A list of the source material may be found on page 227." - from preliminary page entitled Editor's Note. Eccles, David (binding design) (illustrateur).
