In this role, he manages more than 100 Local Championships, 18 U.S. and International Qualifiers, a European Championship, and the World Championship. Bloeme's career of tossing, skipping, bouncing, spinning, and twirling began when he finished third overall and first in distance at the Junior National Frisbee Championships at the age of 15. In 1976, he won the World Frisbee Championships. In 1983, Bloeme added a new element to his flying disc repertoire â" a black and white Border Collie named Whirlin' Wizard. The two went on to win the 1984 World Canine Frisbee Disc Championship making Wizard, the youngest dog, at the time, to win the title. Bloeme became the only person to win a world title both by himself and with his dog. In 1990, Bloeme added a little magic to his routine â" literally â" with the addition of Magic, a black and white Australian Shepherd. Bloeme, Wizard, and Magic performed hundreds of disc dog demonstrations at sporting events including Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, National Football League, and World Football League games. During the 1970's, Bloeme served as technical advisor to CBS Sports for a television special on Frisbee. Bloeme has also served twice as the color commentator for Animal Planet in their one-hour specials on the World Canine Frisbee Disc Championships. Frisbee Dogs: How to Raise, Train and Compete is the definitive volume on the sport and contains pages of helpful hints, with photographs and illustrations. Have you ever been to a major sporting event and seen amazing Frisbee dogs dazzle the crowd? Seen them perform on television, at a park, or beach? Its a spectacular sight! Want to know how you can train your dog to catch just like a World Champ? Now you can as World Champion Peter Bloeme takes you on a written and pictorial adventure through the process of raising and training a Frisbee dog. Disc dog (commonly called Frisbee dog) is a dog sport. In disc dog competitions, dogs and their human flying disc throwers compete in events such as distance catching and somewhat choreographed freestyle catching. The sport celebrates the bond between handler and dog, by allowing them to work together. The term "disc" is preferred because "Frisbee" is a trademark (held by Wham-O) for a brand of flying disc. The sport got its start in the early 1970s, paralleling the rise in popularity of Frisbee sport. The definitive moment came on August 5, 1974 when Alex Stein, a 19-year-old college student from Ohio, and his dog, Ashley Whippet, jumped the fence at a nationally broadcast baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds. Stein had with him a couple of flying discs, which he threw for the dog. Ashley astonished the crowd with his disc-catching, as he ran up to 35 miles per hour and leaped 9 feet in the air to snag the disc. The stunt was so novel that the game was stopped and Joe Garagiola continued to announce the flying disc action on the field. Finally, after eight minutes, Stein was escorted off the field and arrested. The nationally televised exhibition of Ashley's skill did much to fuel interest in the sport. Stein worked with Irv Lander and Eldon McIntire to create the Frisbee Dog World Championship for people and their dogs. Even today, Stein and McIntire continue to contribute to the sport. The Canine Frisbee Disc World Championship (also called the World Finals Championship) was long considered the crowning culmination of the sport. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
