After graduating from Columbia University, Borland worked for various newspapers across the United States, eventually settling in Philadelphia and writing for the Philadelphia Morning Sun and the Morning Ledger from 1926 to 1937. In 1937 he began writing for the New York Times, first as a staff writer for the Sunday Magazine and then, from 1942 until his death in 1978, as an editorial writer for the Sunday Times. His series of editorials about his experiences as an outdoorsman was later compiled into two books. Borland also wrote short stories, poetry, novels [including westerns under the pseudonym Ward West], articles for various magazines and one play.
