Spruth setzt sich kritisch mit den deutsch-polnischen Schulbuchempfehlungen auseinander, die aus der gemeinsamen deutsch-polnischen Schulbuchkommission hervorgegangen waren. Er untersucht darin vor allem, wie deutsche und polnische Geschichte in Schulbüchern dargestellt werden sollten und welche Auswirkungen die Empfehlungen auf den Geschichtsunterricht haben könnten. Ein wesentlicher Teil des Buches behandelt Themen wie Preußen und Polen, die polnischen Teilungen, die deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, den Zweiten Weltkrieg und die Vertreibung der Deutschen. Spruth vertritt dabei eine deutlich revisionistische und nationalkonservative Perspektive und lehnt die Schulbuchempfehlungen als einseitig ab. Zeitgenössische Besprechungen geben diese Argumentation ausdrücklich wieder. Historisch interessant ist das Buch deshalb auch als Dokument der westdeutschen Kontroverse um die deutsch-polnische Schulbuchrevision Ende der 1970er Jahre. Die damalige Debatte war tatsächlich breit geführt worden; neben Spruths Kritik existierten auch wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen und Stellungnahmen, die die gemeinsamen Schulbuchempfehlungen anders bewerteten.
