Hace un siglo apenas se podía intuir el cambio radical que significaría el descubrimiento, bajo la arena del desierto, de incontables fragmentos de papiros egipcios relativos a asuntos de la vida cotidiana, o el hallazgo de graffitti y de bibliotecas privadas en las ciudades cubiertas por la lava del Vesuvio. Además de los textos literarios, institucionales y de inscripciones conmemorativas que se conocían tradicionalmente, hoy tenemos testimonios de una gran variedad de formatos, géneros y usos de documentos escritos. Los autores del presente volumen analizan textos administrativos, libros, panfletos, graffitti y otros documentos y exploran la significativa relación que hubo entre estas diversas formas y soportes de la escritura entre los siglos VI a.
