First published in Paris in 1838. The introduction is subtitled "Instruction Paternelle a Leon et a Therese". The chapters are titled: "De l'eglise", "Du palais", "Des assemblees", "Des soirees", "Des diners", "Des visites", "De la Conversation", "Des sejours a la campagne", "Des voyages", "Des parents", "Des amis", "Des domestiques", "De soir, pour les garcons", "De soir, pour les filles". Near the end of the work she gives this piece of advice: " Il est tres-doux d'avoir des gens autour de soi, et de se voir epargner mille petites peines, mais il faut savoir se passer du service d'autrui". The countess of Bradi, a friend of Madame de Genlis, wrote works for young people, short stories and manuals on politeness and the art of writing. She was raised harshly, it is said, by her cavalry captain father. She married a Corsican nobleman when she was seventeen.
