The author, born in China and educated in England, returned to China as an assistant keeper of the British Museum, visiting kilns and factories in Jingdezhen as well as connecting with the major ceramics collectors at the time in China. Based on this first-hand experience, Brankston developed a new interpretation of the early products of these kilns, particularly in the Yongle period. The result was first published in the present volume in 1938, and republished in a limited edition, with added material, in 1970. First edition, first printing, one of 650 copies only, inscribed on the front free endpaper recto, "From one connoisseur to another, R.K.S. from J.M.P. August 15 1939". James Marshall Plumer and R. K. Stockwell were two leading American collectors of Chinese antiquities. In 1941, their collections were exhibited at the University of Michigan, where Plumer was lecturer on Far Eastern art; he wrote the exhibition catalogue. Among his many academic activities, Plumer (1899-1960) served as the editor of the Far Eastern Ceramic Bulletin. At the University of Michigan, "he imparted his enthusiasm for the subject to his students, oftentimes interrupting classes for a hands-on demonstration of a traditional Chinese tea service and hosting luncheons at his home served in authentic Chinese ceramic bowls" (Monuments Foundation). The Plumer-Stockwell exhibition ("Design and Technique in Ancient Chinese Bronze Mirrors") was mounted at the university's Rackham Building from 4-15 March.
