The author also explores the operational challenges of maintaining these powerful machines in extreme weather conditions and discusses the transition to even larger and more powerful locomotive designs, culminating in the introduction of the Santa Fe type 2-10-2 locomotives, which set new standards for hauling capacity on the Rocky Mountain section. Through the author's firsthand experience as a locomotive designer and his access to archival material, this book provides a valuable insight into the engineering and operational aspects of these remarkable locomotives, which played a pivotal role in the development of Canada's transportation infrastructure.
