Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 1854, pp817-1252, plus 24-page publisher's catalog, index for all three volumes. Covers somewhat discolored, extremities moderately worn, contents VG. With an appendix of poetical fragments, rendered into English verse by various authors, and a general index. Each volume complete in itself. From Bohn's Classical Library series. Athenaeus was a Greek rhetorician and grammarian, who lived during the end of the 2nd and beginning of the 3rd century AD. Several of his publications are lost, but the fifteen-volume Deipnosophistae mostly survives. It is a work of literary, historical, and antiquarian references set in Rome at a series of banquets held by the protagonist Publius Livius Larensis for an assembly of grammarians, lexicographers, jurists, musicians, and hangers-on. It is filled with the type of scholarly material that learned men might discuss over dinner, thus the title.
