Hardcover. Etat : Like New. Etat de la jaquette : Like New. 1st Carroll & Graf Edition: 2005. 266 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy and dust jacket! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially and virtually flawless copy and dust jacket with crisp pages, clean text, and very light shelf wear. Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes is a fic…tional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who first appeared in publication in 1887. He was the creation of Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess and is renowned for his skillful use of astute observation, deductive reasoning and forensic skills to solve difficult cases. Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that feature Holmes. The first story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself, this including the Blanched Soldier, and two others are written in the third person. In two stories (The Musgrave Ritual and The Adventure of the Gloria Scott), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, whereas Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. Conan Doyle said that the character of Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. Tim Byrne (Cover Design) (illustrateur).

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition red boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Caleb Carr; Author Dedication; Afterword by Jon Lellenberg (U.S. agent for the Conan Doyle Esta…te and co-editor of a number of anthologies of new Sherlock Holmes stories, and the historian of The Baker Street Irregulars) and Acknowledgments. "The Author Who Invented The Historical Thriller Takes On The Most Famous Scientific Detective In History. Caleb Carr's newest tale (commissioned by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) begins when Sherlock Holmes reveals to Dr. Watson an encrypted telegram he has received from his brother Mycroft; the famous detective has been summoned to the aid of Queen Victoria in Scotland. Rushed northward on a royal train - and nearly murdered themselves en route - Holmes and Watson are soon joined by Mycroft, and learn of the brutal killings of a renowned architect and his foreman, both of whom had been preparing to renovate a wing of the famous and forbidding Royal Palace of Holyrood, in Edinburgh. Mycroft has enlisted his brother to help solve the murders that may be key elements of a much more elaborate and pernicious plot on the Queen's life. But the circumstances of the two victims' deaths also call to Holmes's mind the terrible murder - in the palace of Holyrood - of "The Italian Secretary," David Rizzio. The only difficulty? Rissio, a music teacher and confidante of Mary, Queen of Scots, was butchered before Mary's very eyes three centuries earlier by supporters of England's Queen Elizabeth (and perhaps with the approval of that uncompromisng ruler herself) in an atttempt to break the spirit of the very independent young Scottish Queen. Holmes proceeds to alarm Watson with the suggestion that the Italian Secretary's vengeful spirit may have taken the lives of the two men as punishment for disturbing the scene of his assassination. Will these two new deaths turn out to be mere coincidence? Have old political rivalries reared their poisonous heads once again? Or has the Italian Secretary indeed exacted his own terrible revenge? Told with his unique feel for historical detail and the architecture of human evil, Caleb Carr's brilliant new offering enriches the Conan Doyle tradition, with a fascinating yet relentlessly-paced tale that extends into a realm unprecedented even for Sherlock Holmes." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. Fine unread condition black boards, black cloth spine, with gold front cover and spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes List of Other Books by Caleb Carr; Author Dedication and Preliminary Page Quote by Th…eodore Roosevelt; Acknowledgments and About the Author. Illustrated with front and rear endpaper maps of Lower Manhattan circa 1897. "In The Angel of Darkness, Caleb Carr brings back the vivid world of his bestselling The Alienist but with a twist: this story is told by the former street urchin Stevie Taggert, whose rough life has given him wisdom beyond his years. Thus New York City, and the groundbreaking alienist Dr. Kreizler himself, are seen anew. It is June 1897. A year has passed since Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline. Kreizler and his friends - high-living, crime reporter John Schuyler Moore; indomitable, derringer-toting Sara Howard; the brilliant (and bickering) detective brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson; powerful and compassionate Cyrus Montrose; and Stevie Taggert, the boy Kreizler saved from a life of street crime - have returned to their former pursuits and tried to forget the horror of the Beecham case. But when the distraught wife of a Spanish diplomat begs Sara's aid, the team reunites to help find her kidnapped infant daughter. It is a case fraught with danger, since Spain and the United States are on the verge of war. Their investigation leads the team to a shocking suspect: a woman who appears to the world to be a heroic nurse and a loving mother, but who may in reality be a ruthless murderer of children. Once again, Caleb Carr proves his brilliant ability to re-create the past, both high life and low. As the horror unfolds, Delmonico's still serves up wondrous meals, and a summer trip to the elegant gambling parlors of Saratoga provides precious keys to the murderer's past. At the same time, we go on revealing journeys into Stevie's New York, a place where poor and neglected children - then as now - turn to crime and drugs at shockingly early ages. Peppered throughout are characters taken from real life and rendered with historical vigor, including suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton; painter Albert Pinkham Ryder; and Clarence Darrow, who thunders for the defense in a tense courtroom drama during which the sanctity of American motherhood itself is put on trial. Fast-paced and chilling, The Angel of Darkness is a tour de force, a novel of modern evil in old New York." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Lambert, J.K. (book design); Carpenter, Andy (jacket design) (illustrateur).
