This book provides a comprehensive survey of London during the Middle Ages, spanning the era from King Alfred's reign to the accession of the House of Stuart. The author traces the ebbs and flows of the city's prosperity and its gradual rise to national prominence, drawing on chronicles, charters, and other sources to recreate the sights, sounds, and daily life of medieval London. From the construction of the White Tower by William the Conqueror to the completion of Westminster Abbey under Henry III, the author brings to life the city's architectural and cultural development. The book also examines the complex civic government of the period, the role of religious houses, and the vibrant pageantries and festivals that characterized the era. Ultimately, this book offers a vivid and engaging portrait of medieval London, shedding light on the origins of many of the city's enduring traditions and institutions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
