The book has a personal value as it shows him in his family life. It shows Lee's attitude in defeat. He was beaten, completely and hopelessly beaten. In Lee's last years his… countrymen in all the States of the Confederacy looked up to him as their guide and leader. There is an Appendix of Unpublished Letters and an Index. Pp167 There is light tanning throughout but no markings of any kind. It has rough deckled page edges. Previous owner's name appears on the first page. Spine is loosened somewhat but not separated. See pictures for the condition of the outer boards.
