This Lot: A Historic Collection Of Six Alan Shepard Family (Received) Letters Regarding The Mercury Space Program Selection, And Families Of The 7 Astronauts Chosen For The Mercury Space Program. In 1989, The Derry, NH Shepard Family Home Was Sold And The Contents Were Auctioned Off. Among The Estate Auction Were Several Letters, Objects And Photos That Had Been Saved By Shepard's Parents Regarding His Selection To Become America's First Astronaut In Space. The Present Collection Focuses On An Essay, And 5 Letters To Shepard's Parents From The Astronauts And Their Parents, As Well As Shepard's Wife. The Six Letters Are As Follows: 1. Feb 12, 1959 ALS From Shepard's Wife Loise To Shepard's Parents. In The Letter She Announces Shepards' Making The Cut From 110 To 36. "Dearest Rennie And Daddie Shep- Well, "Our Boy" Has Really Stirred Up A Good One This Time, And He's Loving Every Minute." It Must Be Exciting To Be In On The Ground Floor Of A Big Project Like This. I Don't Know How Much How He Has Told You (All He's Allowed To, I Know), But It Will Be A Long Time Before The Tests Will Take Place. The Number Has Been Cut Down To 36 Now, From 110, And He Is Among The Ones Remaining. While He Is Gone For 2 Weeks Now, It Will Be The End Of March Or The 1St Of April Before They Announce The Final 12. And Then It Narrows Down To One The Next Year Or The Next Year, However All 11 Will Be Educated In The Same Way And They Will Be In The Front Row For All The New Inventions. Alan Is So Pleased He Has Come This Far, For It Is An Honor. Time Magazine Has Two Good Articles.Love To All- Louise 2. A May 19, 1959 Als From Mrs Virgil Grissom To The Mother Of Alan Shepard. With Snapshot Of Capenter's Family (4 Young Kids). Quote From Letter "Scott Is Discovering In Al A Stimulating New Friend. They Left Here From Our House One Afternoon For A Jog Up To D.C. In Alan's Corvette, And A More Scrumptious Looking Pair Of Males I Have Yet To See." 5. May 5, 1959 Als With Envelope From Capt L.G. [Leroy Gordon] Cooper Jr To The Parents Of Alan Shepard. Envelope Has Handwritten Return Address "Nasa Space Task Group, Project Mercury, Langley Air Force Base, Va." In The Letter, He Mentions He Was Shepard's Roomate During The Selection Process.Signed "Capt And Mrs Lucy G Cooper Jr". 6.
