Walt Disney's animated film Alice in Wonderland (1951) is based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1872). Walt Disney was inspired by Carroll's books from a young age, and his early silent "Alice Comedies" in the 1920s showed the imaginative author's influence on him. Disney purchased the rights to Tenniel's Alice illustrations in 1931 with the idea of turning the books into a film, but it wasn't until 1951 that the project was finally completed. Featuring the voices of Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn, Sterling Holloway and others, the film received a lukewarm reception when it was released, but has since come to be regarded as one of Disney's finest feature-length films. Like other hand-drawn Disney films, Alice in Wonderland required hundreds of thousands of hand-drawn cels (24 images equated to only a single second of animation) and the loving labor of hundreds of artists.
