Paperback. Etat : Good. A fascinating look at an underappreciated woman in American history whose newspaper fostered a national conversation on women's issues. Amelia Bloomer, when her name is recognized at all, is usually remembered for bloomers, the trouser-turned-frilly-shorts that bear her name. While she was a rational dress advocate for a time-calling on women to abandon rigid corsets and heavy petticoats for long trousers, shorter skirts, and sensible boots-it was "but an incident" in the larger story of her life and impact. Bloomer's true legacy includes her work as editor and publisher of The Lily, the first newspaper for and by women. Founded to promote temperance, it soon broadened to include some of the most important issues to women in that day, including the right to vote, and included contributions from thinkers like Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The groundbreaking paper brought the conversation from Seneca Falls right to the doorsteps of women across the expanding nation. Hugely influential and respected by her peers in the nineteenth-century suffragist movement like Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, Bloomer was guided by a rigid sense of morality. She refused to be intimidated or swayed by social pressure, from her humble upbringing in upstate New York through to her eventual move to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where she continued to move the needle on women's suffrage in the more flexible new governments of the West. Sara Catterall's deeply researched biography lays bare the quiet determination and steady work that eventually-though not in Bloomer's lifetime-would result in women's right to vote. …

Paperback. Etat : Good. More than a century before the Wright brothers' first flight, humans were taking to the skies in hot air balloons. Today, with basic craft skills, you can build and safely launch your own balloons using inexpensive, readily available materials. Author and inventor Clive Catterall provides illustrated, step-by-step instructions for eight different homemade models, as well as the science and history behind them. Some, like the Solar Tetroon or the Trash Bag Sausage, are made from plastic bags and tape. Others, like the Khom Loi or the Kongming Lantern, are built using tissue paper and wire. The Hot Air Balloon Book also shows readers ways to heat the interior air that lifts these balloons, from tea candles to hair dryers, kitchen toasters to the sun's warming rays. Always keeping safety in mind, the author includes detailed guidelines on when and where open flames are appropriate and the proper weather conditions to launch these lighter-than-air craft.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. From August 1950 until 1966 Harold Macmillan kept one of the fullest and most entertaining political diaries of the twentieth century. This first volume starts in the last full year of the post war Labour government, follows his rise through the Churchill and Eden governments via a succession of high offices, and culminates with his becoming Prime Minister in 1957. He was an acute observer of events and people not just in his own country or party, but on the wider international and political scene. His Diary provides wry portraits of many of the leading political figures of the period and records his personal take on the great issues and events of the day. In the process Macmillan's wider activities and inner concerns are also revealed, casting light beyond the famously 'unflappable' exterior onto the character of one of the most enigmatic figures in modern British political history.…
