With a new preface to this, the first one-volume edition. Tipped into the prelims is a short autograph letter from the author to the previous owner of the volume, in which he tells his recipient where he gathered his sources for another unnamed work on Goldsmith. The letter, written from Rome and dated Dec. 1925, is in Lucas's notoriously difficult hand, and is accompanied by a brief article, extracted from a contemporary publication, which comments on Lucas's 'most individual "fist"'. Various other newspaper clippings and a couple of further images are tipped into the volume, causing slight browning in places.
