Binding slightly shaken between front flyleaf and half-title; binding separating between last two leaves of publisher's rear advertising section; binding shaken between pages 178-181 with 179-180 and adjoining unpaged plate detached and now laid-in; other lesser binding stress points. Endpapers soiled; pencil inscription and old ink signature on front free endpaper; some slight foxing and a few stains to leaves; loss to final advertising leaf. B/w frontispiece retains tissue guard sheet - plates illustrated by Charles M. Relyea. Sold as is but a scarce novel by noted Mississippi author Harris Dickson who structured its plot around the true historical figure of Charlotte Christine Sophie, Princess of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (1694-1715). An attorney and judge, Harris Dickson was born in Yazoo City in 1868 but resided in Vicksburg for his adult life and served as a correspondent for Collier's Magazine during World War I and as a technical advisor to the Work Projects Administration in Mississippi during the 1930s.

Orig. published in 1905 & then again in 1908 by a different publisher, this is a sli…ghtly later (n.d.) reprint from A. L. Burt, which retains the lovely turn-of-the-century illustrations (frontispiece + 3 full-color plates) by Charles M. Relyea. With cream-colored cloth over green quarter cloth-covered boards, stamped with bright gilt lettering & small window-framed image to front cover, this small octavo (5" x 7.75") is in VG condition: very clean with an occasional spot or smudge, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages off-white & unmarked with modest tanning. Light soil & rubbing to exterior. The clipped DJ is only Fair: largely intact, but missing sections at both head & tail of spine; darkened & rubbed, but looks lovely in new clear mylar cover.
