Die kurzen Strophen des ersten Chordialogs, gleichsam vor Aufgehen des Vorhangs gesungen, werden zu einem dramatischen Bilde von eindringlicher Schärfe. Zwei Chöre (Frauen, die symbolische Tochter Zion begegnen sich auf dem Wege nach Golgatha und rufen sich, in der Ferne den Zug erblickend, fassungslose Klagen zu. Unendliches Gewoge in hartem e-moll. Erst jetzt öffnet sich der Schauplatz. Entsprechend hat auch der Schlußchor als außerhalb des Vorgangs stehender Epilog zu gelten.
