Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of Anglo-Irish chronicles, focusing specifically on the work of Friar John Clyn, a Franciscan monk who lived in Kilkenny during the fourteenth century. It places Clyn's annals within the broader historical context of Ireland in the early 1300s, a period marked by conflict between English and Irish forces, as well as internal power struggles amongst both Anglo-Norman and native Irish factions. The author examines the challenges faced by Clyn and other monkish chroniclers in recording history during this turbulent time. While the work lacks the detailed accounts of individuals and their motivations found in contemporary English chronicles, it offers a unique perspective on Irish society, highlighting the interplay of cultural influences and the complexities of power dynamics. The book also sheds light on the evolving social structure of Ireland during this period, exploring the impact of the Scottish invasion of 1315 on the English settlers and the native Irish population. Examining the rise of powerful Anglo-Irish families and the waning authority of the English crown, the author paints a vivid picture of a society teetering on the brink of anarchy. The book's insights into the social and political climate of Ireland during this critical period offer a valuable contribution to our understanding of this complex and often overlooked chapter in Irish history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
