Some pencil erasure residue noted. DJ has wear, soiling, tears and chips. Excerpts from 422 letters sent to John Glenn after his orbital flight plus his comments. John Herschel Glenn Jr. (July 18, 1921 - December 8, 2016) was a U. S. Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, and United States Senator from Ohio. In 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth. Glenn was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II, China and Korea. He shot down three MiG-15 aircraft, and was awarded six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. In 1957, he made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States. He was one of the Mercury Seven, military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA as the United States' first astronauts. Glenn was fifth person and third American in space. He received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1962 and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990. Glenn became the oldest person to fly in space as a crew member of the Discovery space shuttle and the only person to fly in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs. As John Glenn wrote in the Foreword that the letters selected for this book were not the usual run of letters. They were from a small percentage of the mail that were deemed of 'special interest.' In the process of selecting excerpts, the focus was on 'the interesting parts of the letters.' Each of the letters were answered. Most of the mail came from just wonderful Americans who wanted to be associated with what had occurred and to express themselves personally.…

Ajouter au panierFine Binding. Etat : New. Limited Edition. Published to mark the 120th anniversary of 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit', this delightful Folio Society edition is strictly limited to 1000 copies. This is a new copy in the original packaging as received directly from The Folio Society. Stock images. THE COLLECTION of rarely seen editions of Beatrix Potter's much loved debut, 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit', features exquisite facsimiles from the archive of her publisher, Frederick Warne & Co. Ltd. Collectors can follow the emergence of the miniature masterpiece from the seeds of the story in a now famous picture letter written to entertain a sick child, through Beatrix Potter's privately printed edition with its distinctive line drawings, to the mock-up book - or maquette - handwritten in Potter's beautiful script showing exactly how she wished the words and pictures to appear. With the full-colour commercial deluxe version first produced in 1902, the transformation is complete. Also tucked inside the elegant presentation box are charming replicas of five tiny Christmas letters, a giclée print of Peter wearing his signature blue jacket, and a hand-numbered, letterpress-printed, limitation certificate. THE SET is completed by a specially commissioned commentary volume comprising a delightful foreword from renowned actor, screenwriter and Beatrix Potter devotee, Dame Emma Thompson, and a richly illustrated, authoritative history of 'The Tale' written by Sara Glenn, Commercial Curator of the Warne Archive. THE PRESENTATION BOX measures 14'' x 13¾'' x 2'' and is covered in light blue cloth blocked in silver and dark blue, and lined with paper blocked in silver with a design taken from one of Potter's illustrations. HEAVY/OVERSIZE/HIGH VALUE. U.K. postage at default charge but overseas buyers will be asked for extra. Enquiries welcome. ORDERS professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured. U.S. BUYERS: Books remain exempt from import duty under U.S. law. I provide accurate customs forms to protect buyers from unnecessary charges and to minimise delays. Potter, Beatrix (illustrateur).…
