The title page and following page (first 2 pages of the Table of Contents) is detached as a section but laid in loosely. The text is a little toned but is sound. James Buchanan Eads (1820-1887) was an American engineer best known for his triple arch steel bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Louis (constructed in 1874). He was also an inventor who held several patents. He attained recognition and fortune for designing diving and shipwreck retrieval methods along the Mississippi, often doing the most dangerous work himself. During the Civil War he helped construct Ironclad ships for use on the Mississippi. He oversaw the construction of 7 ironclads in 5 months. Scarce.
