Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Illustrated Edition. America's Wonderlands: The Scenic National Parks and Monuments of the United States, published in 1959 by the National Geographic Society. Prepared by the National Geographic Book Service under Merle Severy, with a foreword by National Geographic Society president and editor Melville Bell Grosvenor and an introduction by National Park Service director Conrad L. Wirth. A volume in the National Geographic "World in Color Library." An especially attractive mid-century survey of America's national parks, monuments, wildlife, scenery, geology and natural history. The substantial 512-page volume contains 466 illustrations, including 390 in full color. Profusely illustrated with photographs, maps and paintings, including striking wildlife artwork by Walter A. Weber. Featured subjects include Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Everglades and many other historic National Park Service locations. COMPLETE WITH THE PUBLISHER-ISSUED FOLDING MAP: The original large 10-color map, National Parks, Monuments and Shrines of the United States and Canada, remains present in the rear-cover pocket. The book's publisher's text specifically identifies this map as being tucked into the back-cover pocket. Its survival is an important point of completeness, since these removable maps are frequently missing from otherwise intact copies. ALSO INCLUDED: A related National Geographic folding map titled Vacationlands of the United States and Southern Canada, copyright 1966. This second map was added by a previous owner at a later date and was not originally issued with the 1959 book. It is included as complementary vintage National Geographic cartographic ephemera. Bound in decorative green cloth with darker green spine and an Old Faithful geyser design on the front board. Book is in Very Good condition overall, with clean, bright and vividly illustrated pages; light exterior wear; and some visible wear at the lower inner binding/gutter. Original pictorial dust jacket is present but in Fair condition, showing substantial rubbing, edge wear, tears, creasing, chipping and areas of paper loss, particularly along the upper rear portion and extremities. Jacket also shows staining/discoloration. Please examine photographs for the best indication of condition. A visually rich vintage National Geographic production and a desirable complete copy for collectors of National Geographic publications, national-park history, conservation, American travel, wildlife art and vintage cartography. Offered with both the original 1959 pocket map and the separately added 1966 "Vacationlands" map. Seller's Condition Note Very Good hardcover in Good original dust jacket. Decorative cloth binding remains attractive, with clear spine lettering. Interior is clean and colorful. Some wear is visible at the lower inner binding/gutter. Jacket has heavy edge wear, rubbing, tears, creasing, chipping, staining and paper loss, especially near the upper rear portion. Original publisher-issued folding pocket map is present. An additional related 1966 National Geographic folding map was laid in later and is also included. No ownership writing or library markings observed in the photographed areas.
