Spine slightly cocked, trifling wear, title-page foxed from adjacent tissue, else an excellent copy of a fragile 1890s book. Endpaper signed by Nora Mallam. Dec 31st 94 [1894, the year of publication]. *** With a frontispiece and 46 text illustrations by Hal Hurst. Nora Mallam is probably the daughter of the Oxford surgeon Henry Parr Mallam. In 1908 Nora married the London-based Canadian architect Percy Leslie Waterhouse. *** Duncan 1861-1922 was a Canadian journalist and author. In 1890 she married Everard Cotes, an entomologist who lived and worked in India where he became an important figure in Indian journalism. In Simla in 1912 the couple hosted E. M. Forster, who noted Duncan as being 'clever and odd'. In 1890 Duncan published her first book, a fictionalised version of her youthful round-the-world trip. Some 21 novels followed, with The Simple Adventures of a Memsahib 1893, and Vernon's Aunt 1894, the first of a number set in the Anglo-Indian society of the Raj. See Wolff 1959. *** The illustrator Hal Hurst 1865-1938 was a founding member of the Royal Miniature Society.
