A collection of three medical addresses by Benjamin Eddy Cotting (1812-1897), an American physician, surgeon, and president of the Massachusetts Medical Society. The addresses are titled as follows: "Nature in Disease.--An Address before the Norfolk District of the Massachusetts Medical Society, at the Annual Meeting, May 12, 1852," "Disease,--A Part of the Plan of Creation.--'The Annual Discourse' before the Massachusetts Medical Society, May 31, 1865," and "My First Question--as a medical student--Its Solution a Sure Basis for Rational Therapeutics.--An Address before the Norfolk District of Massachusetts Medical Society, at the Annual Meeting, May 8, 1872." The central subjects discussed in Cotting's addresses are diseases, their treatments, and best practices as to cure or treat diseases. Cotting appears to be part of a group of physicians whose philosophy is to not aggressively use medicine to treat diseases. He advocates for "rational therapeutics" and questions the contemporary relying heavily on medicine to treat diseases. In his first address, Cotting initiates his discussion about how to best treat patients. He considers whether physicians should treat patients with medicine or more non-invasive means. In his next address, Cotting argues that disease is part of God's creative design. However, Cotting withholds any final conclusions regarding the details of what exact role diseases play in God's plan. In the third address, Cotting elaborates upon the subject of therapeutics. The title of this address alludes to the question he had asked as a medical student, "What will be the result and course of the disease if left to itself, without medicine?" What follows is a discussion about the scientific and moral considerations physicians should have when deciding how to best treat a patient. Cotting maintains a stance that is generally opposed to the overuse of medicine but still appears to be open to using it when necessary. A key component in Cotting's medical philosophy is that patients are still cared for and not entirely left to Nature's decision. However, he speaks in positive terms about cases in which "Nature took its course" and patients were healed. Cotting says that historically, medicine-based philosophies overtook the medical philosophy of non-intervention. However, he believes there has been a recent change in opinion favoring a return to non-intervening treatments which he suggests is due to new research and advancements in treating patients through this more "natural" approach. It argues that disease is an integral part of the plan of Creation, rather than a random event or a flaw in design. The author examines the history of disease, from its earliest origins to its continued presence in the present day, and posits that it has been a constant and necessary factor in the development of life on Earth. The book delves into the complex interactions between disease and the human body, arguing that diseases are not simply negative forces to be eradicated but rather essential elements in the maintenance of balance and health. Through an examination of specific diseases and their historical impact, the author uncovers patterns and mechanisms that challenge conventional understandings of pathology and offer new perspectives on the nature of disease and our relationship with it.
