Ajouter au panierTrade paperback. Etat : Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Format is approximately 8.75 inches by 11 inches. 190, [2]n pages. Decorative cover Illustrations (many in color). Maps. Foreword by Mark Orman. Introductions by Caroline Mierop. Essays by Maurice Culot, Andres Duany, Elisabeth Plater-Zyberk, and Jean-Francois Lejeune. This book was based on the Exhibition Miami--Architecture of the Tropics, produced by the Foundation pour l'Architecture, Brussels, and by the University of Miami shown as the center for the Fine Arts, Miami, 1992. Tropical architecture is the design that focuses and responds to the climatic conditions of the tropics. It studies the significant influences that impact architecture in tropical regions and develops passive strategies to lessen heat gain. It also encourages air movement through a home or building. Contents include Foreword, Transatlantic, Blows to the Heart and Fleeting Impressions, The Three Traditions of Miami, Dreams of Cities, Tropical Cocktail [The Domestic Scale, The New Town of Seaside, The Village of Windsor]. Some of the essays have been translated from the original French. This publication reveals the extraordinary achievement of architects faced with the challenge of designing buildings to coexist with the climate and topography of the tropics. Residential, commercial and institutional concerns of form and function war addressed in a great variety of design solutions. Jean-François Lejeune is Professor who teaches architectural design, urban design, and history-theory. He taught at the Oregon School of Design (1985-87). In 2007 he was an Affiliated Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. Born in Belgium, he graduated from the University of Liège (Belgium) with the Diploma of Engineer-Architect. In Europe, Lejeune worked as urban designer for the Atelier de Recherche et d'Action Urbaines (Brussels) and for the Archives d'architecture moderne (AAM, Brussels). In Miami, he collaborated with various architecture offices like Duany Plater-Zyberk, Shulman and Associates, and Brillhart Architecture. His books include, among others, The Making of Miami Beach 1933-1942: The Architecture of Lawrence Murray Dixon (with Allan Shulman), Sitte, Hegemann, and the Metropolis (with Charles Bohl), Modern Architecture and the Mediterranean: Vernacular Dialogues and Contested Identities (with Michelangelo Sabatino. Lejeune's research has also focused on Latin America and Miami and he is a founding member and secretary of DoCOMOMO-US/Florida.
